Veterinarian - Locum

Job Summary

Locum Veterinarian – The primary purpose of this role is to provide preventative care, diagnose and treat diseases and injuries of pets. Pay range is $140 – $160 per hour, determined by experience, skill level, abilities, education and location.

Essential Responsibilities

• Ensure safety of pets, clients and associates by using safe restraining techniques and maintaining clean, sterile, organized treatment areas.
• Obtain relevant client history and maintain proper, complete medical records.
• Educate clients about preventative care, pet health needs, diagnoses, treatments and hospital services.
• Provide professional, efficient and exceptional service, including prescribing and administering preventative care for pet wellness and diagnosing and treating illnesses and injuries.
• Communicate diagnosis and treatment plans to the veterinary medical team and clients.
• Maintain compliance with local, state and federal laws, including controlled substance inventory logs.
• Follow state guidelines regarding duties of veterinary assistants and licensed veterinary technicians.
• Perform basic surgeries with standard instruments and equipment.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent degree.
• Active license in good standing with the applicable state veterinary board.
• DEA drug enforcement license.
• Proven ability to perform basic surgeries with standard instruments.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Organizational ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
• Problem‑solving skills and decisive action in difficult situations.
• Client‑service skills and the ability to advocate for pet health decisions.
• Mathematical and computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office.
• Management ability to enforce policies and encourage team performance.
• Initiative, integrity, cooperativeness, flexibility, independence, and stress resilience.

Special Working Conditions

• Must be confident around pets (dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, etc.).
• Work may exceed 40 hours per week, including weekends and evenings.
• Requires physical ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, and lift up to 50 pounds.
• Exposure to pets that may bite or scratch, anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards and controlled substances.
