Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Staff Float Pool Med/Surg position at a Level II Trauma Center in Montgomery, AL, requiring at least 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience and BLS and NIHSS certifications.

Details

  • Float pool position covering multiple Med/Surg units within a 492-bed Level II Trauma Center and Primary Stroke Center
  • Units covered include: 6 North Trauma Surgical, 5 South Neuroscience, 5 North Med/Surg Oncology, 4 South Clinical Decision Unit, 3 South Orthopedics, and 3 North MS/Ortho/Urology
  • Patient populations vary by unit and include general surgery and vascular, neuro (CVA, TBI, seizure, craniotomy, spinal fusion), oncology/palliative care, general Med/Surg (COPD, CHF, sepsis, renal failure, COVID), orthopedic/spine, and urology/ENT
  • Patient ratios are typically 1:5–6 depending on unit and acuity
  • Telemetry is monitored by Telemetry Techs; RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours
  • EMR: Cerner (preferred)
  • IV pumps: Plum 360 | Medication dispensing: Omnicell | Monitors: Spacelabs
  • 12-hour day and night shifts (7:00 AM–7:00 PM or 7:00 PM–7:00 AM), 36 hours per week
  • Weekend rotation: every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month
  • No on-call requirements
  • Floating is required to like units (e.g., MS-to-MS, MS-to-ICU tasks, MS-to-ER holds; ICU-to-ICU, ICU-to-MS tasks limited to 3, ICU-to-ER holds)
  • Scheduling follows a 4-week cycle using Smart Square; self‑scheduling is not available

Requirements

  • Active AL RN license or compact RN license required (can be in process at time of consideration, with ETA provided)
  • Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum of 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience required
  • Epic or Cerner EMR experience required; Cerner required if experience is exclusively in ICU
  • Chemo administration certification preferred for 5 North Med/Surg Oncology assignments
  • Telemetry experience is a plus — candidates with tele experience should elaborate on the extent of that experience
  • Unit-specific clinical skills required vary and include wound care, chest tubes, NGT/PEG, IV starts, central line blood draws, trach care, ostomy care, foley care, PCA pumps, wound vacs, and more depending on unit assignment
  • DOB (day and month) required for consideration
  • One professional reference from a charge nurse or above from the past 12 months required for consideration
  • Copy of certifications required for consideration

Additional Information

  • First‑time travelers are welcome to apply, provided the minimum experience and EMR requirements are met
  • Travelers will be assigned a home unit on the first day of orientation
  • New travelers to the facility or those returning after 1+ year absence will complete 24 hours of classroom orientation followed by 24 hours of on‑unit orientation; orientation for rehires depends on time since last assignment
  • Unit support includes CNAs (1:6 for vitals, ADLs, and glucose checks), charge nurses, HUC/receptionist, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, hospitalist, and telemetry monitoring techs
  • Former permanent staff must wait 6 months from their last shift before being eligible to return as a traveler
  • Candidates must reside more than 60 miles from the facility to be eligible for this position
  • Holiday coverage required for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy; specific holiday assignments are not guaranteed prior to arrival
  • Extensive RTO blackout dates apply throughout the year — candidates should be aware that time off requests during these periods require manager approval
  • Scrub color: any color permitted
  • Parking available in the parking deck on levels 2–4 only
  • This facility conducts interviews — candidates should be prepared for a SimpliFi interview prior to placement
