About the Job

The University of Minnesota Medical School seeks a driven andinnovative leader to serve as the Inaugural Director of the Centerfor Geroscience and Healthy Aging (CGHA). This individual will havethe opportunity to leverage the strong clinical, education, andresearch infrastructure of UMN to build the division into anational leader in geriatric and palliative care medicine. Thisrecruitment is backed by substantial philanthropic support andinstitutional commitment, providing the incoming Director with theresources to build a nationally recognized program. These uniquefunds underscore the strategic importance of geriatrics,geroscience, and healthy aging to the Medical School, theUniversity, and partners across Minnesota. The Inaugural Directorof CGHA may also be appointed as the Founding Director of theDivision of Geriatrics and Palliative Care Medicine (GPM) in theDepartments of Medicine (DOM) and Family Medicine and CommunityHealth (FMCH). This position will also hold a tenured CommonPaymaster Faculty position with the University of Minnesota andMPhysicians.

Role & Responsibilities

Lead the Center for Geroscience & Healthy Aging(CGHA)

  • Establish and scale the CGHA as a flagship enterprise forhealthy aging—creating programs that advance research, clinicalcare, and innovation; overseeing education to build a skilledworkforce; and extending clinical care and research into ruralMinnesota to reach all communities across the state.
  • Set the CGHA strategy and execution plan (near- and long-term)across discovery, translation, and implementation; align prioritieswith institutional strengths (e.g., iBAM, CHAI, CMRR/CCIR, GrossmanCenter, MN-GWEP, VA GRECC) to accelerate impact in geroscience,dementia, and age-friendly care.
  • Grow faculty and programs: recruit, retain, and mentor basic,translational, clinical, and population scientists; foster teamscience and high-value collaborations; steward philanthropic andinstitutional resources to catalyze research cores, trainingpipelines, and clinical innovation.

Division Director, Geriatrics & Palliative Care(GPM)

  • Set a strategic vision for the Division that advances clinicalexcellence, scholarship, and education within the Medical Schooland health system; build a bold growth plan for geriatrics andpalliative care.
  • Recruit and mentor faculty and staff across geriatrics andpalliative care (with appointments in Medicine and Family Medicine& Community Health); champion faculty development and protecttime for scholarly activity.
  • Lead an age-friendly health system agenda across inpatient andambulatory settings, embedding the 4Ms (What Matters, Medication,Mentation, Mobility) and person-centered, culturally responsivecare.
  • Build a robust research portfolio spanning gerosciencetranslation, dementia/brain health, symptom science,serious-illness care, and implementation science; leverageinformatics and clinical trials infrastructure (includingopportunities such as a future NIA Pepper Center).
  • Advance education and training for UME, GME, and CME; partnerwith Hennepin Healthcare to expand geriatrics and palliativefellowships; extend statewide training through MN-GWEP andinterprofessional programs.
  • Promote inclusive excellence in recruitment, retention,mentorship, and advancement; partner with Medical School DEIleadership to ensure equitable policies, climates, andoutcomes.

Cross-Cutting Leadership

  • Partnerships & alignment: coordinate with M HealthFairview, Minneapolis VA, and community partners to integrateresearch, clinical innovation, and population health—especially forrural and underserved communities.
  • Stewardship & outcomes: set clear metrics for impact(patient outcomes, research funding, workforce training, statewidereach); ensure fiscal responsibility and effective use ofphilanthropic investment.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Medical degree (MD or equivalent) and board certification in arelevant field.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States and ability to belicensed in Minnesota are required.
  • Eligible for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor orProfessor.
  • Record of clinical excellence and understanding of geriatric,palliative, and complex patient care.
  • Outstanding scholarship, including a track record ofpublications and extramural funding.
  • Demonstrated record in supporting diversity, equity, andinclusion.

  • Demonstrated experience in recruiting, retaining, and mentoringa diverse and highly skilled cadre of faculty, staff, andstudents.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range

This role is dually employed by the University ofMinnesota and University of Minnesota Physicians. Salary at theUniversity of Minnesota is dependent upon academic effort of theperson hired, and begins at $55,000. Clinical salary, aligned withclinical effort, is provided through University of MinnesotaPhysicians. Total combined salary is anticipated to be in the rangeof $250,000 – $410,000 and is based on AAMC salary benchmarks.Applicants should complete this application and also an application for the position with the University of MinnesotaPhysicians.
