Technical Trainer, MaintenanceLocation: Midland, Texas FLSA Class: Exempt Responsible to: Senior Training ManagerPosition Summary: This role is responsible for developing and delivering technical training programs that ensure personnel are competent, qualified, and prepared to perform maintenance activities safely and effectively across all operations. This role translates complex maintenance procedures, equipment systems, and operational requirements into clear, practical, and field-ready training. This role supports a competency-based approach, ensuring employees are not only trained but also assessed and verified before performing work.
This position works closely with Maintenance, Operations, Engineering, Health and Safety, and the Leadership Team to ensure training content is accurate, current, and aligned with real-world execution, driving reliability, safety, and operational performance. This role supports both field and classroom material development and employee developmentEssential Duties and Responsibilities:Design and deliver maintenance-focused technical training programs for field and classroom environmentsDevelop instructor-led training, hands-on field exercises, and e-learning modulesTranslate SOPs, procedures, and work instructions into practical training contentDeliver classroom, virtual, and hands-on training sessions at field locationsEnsure training reflects actual equipment, tools, and job conditionsSupport the implementation of competency-based training and qualification programsConduct field assessments and practical evaluations to verify employee capabilityEnsure employees are trained, assessed, and authorized before performing maintenance work.Partner with operations to identify skill gaps and training needsSupport the development of role-based training pathways aligned with risk and job scope.Collaborate with maintenance and engineering teams to align training with equipment systems and processes.Support the standardization of maintenance practices across operations.Incorporate lessons learned from incidents, failures, and reliability trends into training content.Assist in reinforcing preventive maintenance and troubleshooting best practices.Utilize systems such as KPA Flex to assign, track, and document training and competency assessments.Maintain accurate training records, qualifications, and workforce readiness status.Develop and maintain training materials, job aids, and reference guides.Support reporting on training completion, competency status, and program effectivenessEngage with field personnel to ensure training aligns with actual work execution.Support onboarding and training of new hires and contractors.Observe field activities to validate training effectiveness and identify opportunities for improvement.Serve as a technical resource for maintenance personnel and supervisors.Continuously improve training programs based on feedback, audits, and operational performance.Identify opportunities to enhance training delivery, usability, and effectiveness.Support alignment of training programs with HS&E Management System principles and operational goalsCollaborate across departments to drive consistency and standardizationOther Requirements:High school diploma or equivalent required; technical degree or certification preferred10+ years of experience in maintenance, mechanical, electrical, service writing, or related technical fieldExperience in oil & gas, power generation, industrial, or similar environments preferredComputer and technical writing skills are required for this rolePrevious experience delivering training or leading field-based instruction preferredStrong understanding of maintenance systems, equipment, and troubleshooting practicesAbility to translate technical concepts into clear, practical instructionsExperience with competency-based training and workforce qualification programs preferredFamiliarity with learning management systems and field-based training tools (e.g., KPA Flex)Strong organizational, planning, and documentation skillsEffective communication and presentation skillsHands-on, practical teaching approachStrong engagement with field personnel and operational teamsAbility to adapt training to different experience levels and learning stylesOwnership and accountability for training outcomesContinuous improvement mindsetStrong focus on safety, quality, and operational excellenceThe above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by employees assigned to this classification.
