*Position Summary*
The State Inspector conducts thorough, state-mandated safety inspections of heavy-duty trucks, trailers, and fleet equipment while maintaining high standards of safety, accuracy, and regulatory compliance. This position requires a *strong mechanical background*, preferably with extensive experience working on commercial trucks, diesel equipment, trailers, brakes, steering, suspension, electrical systems, and other heavy-duty components.
The State Inspector will serve as a key resource for identifying mechanical and safety deficiencies before equipment enters service. The position will work closely with technicians, fleet management, drivers, and shop leadership to ensure vehicles are safe, properly maintained, and compliant with applicable state and federal regulations.
*Essential Responsibilities*
* Perform thorough state safety inspections on heavy-duty trucks, trailers, and fleet equipment.
* Inspect braking systems, steering, suspension, tires, wheels, lighting, electrical systems, frame components, coupling devices, exhaust systems, and other required safety components.
* Identify mechanical defects, safety hazards, and equipment deficiencies.
* Accurately document inspection findings and maintain required inspection records.
* Determine whether equipment meets applicable state inspection requirements before being placed into service.
* Perform re-inspections following repairs to verify that deficiencies have been properly corrected.
* Use strong mechanical knowledge to identify underlying problems rather than simply identifying visible symptoms.
* Communicate inspection findings clearly to technicians, supervisors, fleet managers, and drivers.
* Work with the maintenance department to prioritize safety-critical repairs.
* Review repair work and verify that repairs meet acceptable safety and mechanical standards.
* Assist technicians with difficult diagnostic and mechanical problems when appropriate.
* Identify recurring failures and make recommendations to reduce equipment downtime and maintenance costs.
* Inspect vehicles following major repairs, accidents, or significant mechanical work when required.
* Maintain a clean, organized, and professional inspection area.
* Ensure inspection equipment and tools are properly maintained and calibrated as required.
* Stay current with changes to state inspection requirements, DOT requirements, company policies, and applicable safety regulations.
* Maintain confidentiality and professionalism when dealing with employees, customers, vendors, and regulatory personnel.
* Immediately report serious safety concerns or equipment that should not be placed into service.
* Support the company's overall safety and preventive-maintenance programs.

* Identify potential problems that may not be immediately visible.
* Explain mechanical problems in a manner that technicians and management can understand.

* Ability to accurately identify mechanical and safety deficiencies.
* Ability to read and understand repair manuals, service information, and technical documentation.
* Valid driver's license appropriate for company equipment.
* Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
* Strong attention to detail.
* Strong communication and documentation skills.

* ASE certifications, particularly heavy-duty truck certifications.
* CDL experience.
