$65,000–$75,000 annual base salary, plus eligibility to earn up to $5,000 in cash performance bonuses during the first 180 days.

About Modern Group

We are three related, founder-owned construction trade companies serving residential and commercial customers throughout Middle Tennessee, with more than 20 years of operating history and over $8 million in combined annual revenue:

• Modern Builders LLC – General construction

• Modern Mechanical Contractors, Inc. – HVAC and electrical

• Modern Plumbing System, Inc. – Plumbing

The Role

This is a hands-on corporate accounting role in a small team. You will work directly with leadership, take ownership of core accounting across the three companies, and help build consistent, accurate processes.

An early priority is completing reconstruction of 2025 records and cleanup and validation of 2026 activity while keeping current accounting and month-end close moving. We currently use Intuit Enterprise Suite following a transition from Premier Construction Software; migrated data and workflows still need review and refinement.

You will build on work already done, investigate discrepancies, identify missing records, and make steady, documented progress. Leadership will provide business context and help obtain records and decisions. You must bring the accounting knowledge and professional judgment to independently handle the full accounting cycle across all three companies when needed. Accounting comes first; related business and project support is secondary.

You must understand accounting end to end and be able to explain and verify your work. AI and software can support efficiency, but they do not replace accounting knowledge, independent judgment, or responsibility for accurate results.

Responsibilities

• Maintain the general ledger, prepare journal entries and accruals, and reconcile bank, credit-card, and balance-sheet accounts.

• Manage AP and AR, support payroll and labor-cost allocations, and reconcile related accounts.

• Own month-end close and prepare financial statements, management reports, and cash-flow information.

• Complete historical reconciliations, investigate discrepancies, and identify missing records and needed corrections.

• Maintain intercompany transactions and reconciliations across the three companies.

• Maintain job costs and project budgets; support billing, pay applications, retainage, and change-order accounting.

• Support work-in-progress (WIP), percentage-of-completion reporting, and project profitability analysis.

• Improve accounting workflows and controls in Intuit Enterprise Suite and document practical procedures.

• Maintain vendor and subcontractor documentation, including W-9s and insurance records, and coordinate with auditors or tax preparers as needed.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a closely related field.

• Hands-on full-cycle accounting experience, including independently completed reconciliations, journal entries, and month-end close responsibilities.

• Solid knowledge of accrual accounting, double-entry accounting, and US GAAP.

• Strong Excel skills and experience with accounting software or ERP systems.

• Ability to research problems, organize incomplete information, prioritize work, and follow through without constant direction.

• Dependable attendance, timely communication, accuracy, and professional judgment.

Preferred Experience

• Construction or project accounting, including job costing, WIP, retainage, and project billing.

• Accounting across multiple related companies and intercompany transactions.

• Historical cleanup, ERP transitions, process improvement, or training accounting support staff.

Construction experience is strongly preferred. We will also consider a strong accountant from another project-based, cost-based, service, or inventory environment who can learn construction accounting quickly.

Compensation, Schedule and Perks

• $65,000–$75,000 base salary

• Performance bonus eligibility: up to $5,000

• Mon–Fri: 8 AM–4 PM or 9 AM–5 PM

• 1-hour paid daily break

• PTO increases with tenure

• Company-paid development for promising staff, as approved

• Potential CFMA membership, courses & certs

• Private on-site gym and free parking

• Student-loan assistance for eligible staff

• Employee discounts

• Growth opportunities as the companies expand

Bonus awards depend on demonstrated accounting competence, accuracy, reliability, initiative, independent judgment, and documented results. The full $5,000 is reserved for exceptional overall contribution and is not guaranteed.
