Onsite Contract Technical Sales Engineering

Job Summary

Senior Sales Engineer responsible for providing technical oversight and guidance to sales team members and other sales engineers. Leading pre-contract engineering for high-risk, high‑complexity load handling activities, ensuring projects are set up for financial and operational success. Conduct detailed engineering analyses, develop lift plans, and select appropriate equipment and rigging configurations. Collaborate closely with sales leads, site teams, and clients to provide technical expertise, address on‑site challenges, ensure regulatory compliance, and mitigate operational risks. Mentor junior engineers, contribute to continuous improvement, and drive innovative solutions that enhance operational efficiency, safety, and cost‑effectiveness in crane and rigging projects.

Job Requirements

  • Experience: 5+ years in the crane, rigging, or heavy lifting industry, with demonstrated project engineering experience.
  • Certifications: Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred, OSHA 10.
  • Technical proficiency: Perform detailed load calculations and structural analyses; understand various cranes, hoists, and rigging equipment. Proficient with CAD, 3D modeling (AutoCAD, Inventor, Lift Planner, or similar). Knowledge of OSHA, AISC, ASME, ANSI, and other lifting standards.
  • Sales strategy: Understand value‑based selling, strategic account focus, and job costing optimization.
  • Software proficiency: RISA‑3D, ANSYS, Mathcad, MS Excel, ERP systems, scheduling software, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Problem‑solving: Diagnose and resolve technical and logistical issues; strong analytical skills for lift plan optimization and meticulous documentation.
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written skills; engage clients, site managers, and cross‑functional teams; present technical concepts to clients.
  • Project management: Lead project budgets, schedules, and risk management; mentor engineering and technical staff.
  • Physical requirements: Travel to project sites as needed; work outdoors and on construction sites, including standing, walking, crawling, and climbing ladders or scaffolding.
  • Fit for duty: Pass drug test, fit‑for‑duty assessment, and background check.

Job Responsibilities

  • Guide junior engineers on technical matters, review their work, and support professional development.
  • Oversee the pre‑contract engineering effort for high‑risk/high‑complexity load handling activities.
  • Work closely with sales leads, site teams, junior sales engineers, and clients to provide technical expertise and coordinate on‑site activities.
  • Review concept and proposal material for technical accuracy and strategic alignment.
  • Create detailed lift plans that ensure safe and efficient operations, considering load calculations, equipment capacities, and environmental factors.
  • Ensure sales strategies such as Next Best Alternative, value‑based selling, and local resource utilization are understood by junior engineers and reflected in concepts and method statements.
  • Serve as lead engineer on large opportunities with multiple scopes and unconventional remove‑and‑replace methods.
  • Incorporate lessons learned from past projects and proposals into future sales efforts.
  • Conduct structural and stability analyses for safe project execution.
  • Determine appropriate cranes, rigging, and lifting equipment based on load requirements and project constraints.
  • Ensure all lifting operations comply with OSHA, ASME, AISC, and ANSI standards.
  • Perform risk assessments to identify and mitigate operational risks.
  • Communicate proposal updates, technical details, and engineering solutions to clients and stakeholders for alignment and satisfaction.
  • Assist Project Engineering efforts as directed by Barnhart Engineering leadership.
  • Identify and implement best practices for safety, efficiency, and innovation in crane and rigging proposals.
  • Stay current with industry trends, new technology, and updated regulatory requirements.
