Senior Embedded Field Reliability Engineer

Seattle or Salt Lake City, Utah | On-site | Full-time

Can you find the intermittent fault, fix it in the field and stop it happening again?

Join a growing AI technology business developing vehicle scanning systems for dealerships, collision repair centres and insurers. Combining embedded hardware, cameras and AI software, these systems help identify vehicle damage and support faster repair assessments.

As the installed fleet expands, we’re looking for a Senior Embedded Field Reliability Engineer to take ownership of deployed system reliability. You’ll investigate real-world failures, deliver practical hardware and software fixes, and give the development team the evidence needed to improve the next generation.

This is a hands-on sustaining engineering role, with meaningful ownership and regular customer interaction. You’ll be comfortable improving existing hardware, shipping workarounds under pressure and keeping deployed systems running reliably.

What you’ll do

  • Investigate intermittent field failures using logs, telemetry, oscilloscopes and board-level diagnostics.
  • Track failure rates, identify root causes and prioritise fixes across the installed fleet.
  • Improve recoverability through watchdogs, safe-mode boot, remote resets and A/B firmware with automatic rollback.
  • Deploy fleet telemetry and deliver software fixes safely through OTA updates.
  • Design and validate low-cost hardware retrofits that technicians can install quickly.
  • Create clear troubleshooting and recovery runbooks for customer support.
  • Work closely with embedded R&D to turn field findings into future design improvements.
  • Travel to customer sites to diagnose faults and explain solutions to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

What you’ll bring

  • 7+ years of hands-on embedded engineering experience, operating at senior or staff level.
  • Proven experience diagnosing failures in deployed hardware, including intermittent faults and RMA or failure-tracking processes.
  • Strong embedded Linux and production C/C++ skills, plus Python for diagnostics and test tooling.
  • Experience with bootloaders, watchdogs, remote recovery, fleet telemetry and OTA updates.
  • Board-level debugging skills covering power sequencing, brownouts, grounding, EMI and thermal issues.
  • Familiarity with camera connectivity such as USB, PoE or GigE.
  • Confidence using oscilloscopes, logic analysers and multimeters, and interpreting schematics and datasheets.
  • A practical, data-driven approach and willingness to travel to customer sites.

Experience with machine vision, multi-camera systems, retrofit boards, or automotive and industrial environments would be particularly useful.

Why join?

  • $150,000–$180,000 base salary plus equity.
  • Direct ownership of reliability across a growing deployed fleet.
  • A small, hands-on hardware team with close collaboration across engineering and support.
  • The opportunity to see your fixes make an immediate difference for customers.
  • Startup pace backed by an established AI business.

Based on-site in Salt Lake City, with travel to customer locations.

Apply if you enjoy getting close to the hardware, solving difficult field problems and making products more dependable.
