Senior Electrical Engineer - 765kV EHV Substation DesignBloomington, Minnesota, United StatesThe OpportunityIn this role, you will have the opportunity to:Function as a technical specialist or in a lead substation design role encompassing EHV transmission level voltage class.Under general direction, develops and applies advanced engineering techniques, concepts and approaches to complex engineering problems.Provide technical guidance over a group or supervise engineering staff on substation design projects.May responsible for developing, validating, and presenting specialist/technical output.Will lead other engineers and interface directly with clients.Be responsible for the overall execution and quality of substation projects as a leader within a team environment.
Key Responsibilities Engineering Standards: Develop and maintain budgets and schedules for multiple substation design projectsPerform EHV substation design, including physical design, protective relaying/control with an emphasis on continuous improvementDeveloping Scoping documents for EHV substation projectsProvides guidance and direction on department design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes and Customer policiesAssists in developing, maintaining and updating engineering standardsProvides technical guidance to others regarding projects and disciplinesQuality/Continuous Improvement: Independently applies knowledge and complies with Customer quality program relative to assigned tasksResponsible for ensuring compliance with Customer quality program while performing internal Quality Assurance technical reviewsProvides related guidance and direction to othersSupports continuous improvement and change management effortsEngineering Production: Prepares a variety of complex engineering deliverables for larger or multiple projectsPerforms complex research and develops recommendations for equipment and/or materials selectionOversees collection, assimilation, and management of data for engineering workPrepares complex engineering calculations following standard methods and principlesManages assigned budget, schedule, and quality requirementsReviews lower level engineering work or assignmentsIs responsible for one or more of the following: leading larger production teams; coordinating multiple discipline activity; and serving as the responsible charge for a projectProject Coordination: Actively coordinates with all other internal/external team members on moderately complex projectsManage the work assignments and ensures quality from direct reports and project team(s)Actively participate in management, project scheduling, and work/resource planning meetingsClient Focus: Interface directly with clients, vendors and subcontractorsCommunicates client interests and drivers to project team members and develops approaches to accommodate these concerns in the performance of the work on moderately complex projectsTypically provides support to business development or pursuit activitiesKnowledge Sharing, Innovation and Technology: Serves as a technical specialist and has knowledge and skill set to provide consultation and guidance to project teams in a particular practice areaTypically supports multiple projects on the complex technical challengesPeople Management - (supervision, career development, training, mentoring): Typically assists with performance management process, mentoring, recognition, and any corrective actions requiredMay participate in career planning, and learning and developmentMentor less experienced engineersProvide constructive feedback to other professionals on performanceMay be a supervisor of other engineers and techniciansResource Management - (budgets, tools, processes, project support): Implements resource management strategyManages engineering resources for small groups of a single discipline Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in engineering from either a recognized accredited program in their home country or the country in which the professional is practicing.Minimum of 8 years related work experience.All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations. Preferred Qualifications Power/Power Systems experience preferredQuality Assurance and Quality Control of EHV substation design projectsEHV Substation design experience (physical & P&C)Technical experience preferredPerforms complex research and develops recommendations for equipment and/or materials selection.Prepare one-lines, connection diagrams, panel elevations and protection & control schematics for power substation equipment.Prepare auxiliary power equipment sizing calculations. Design wiring diagrams for protective relaying panels.Perform complex engineering calculations/studies related to substation projects such as: lightning protection, conduit fill, AC/DC station service loading, surge arrester sizing and voltage drop.Create RTU control, status and analog point lists, raceway/cable schedules along with maintenance/signage and nameplatesPrepare equipment arrangement, grounding, foundation and conduit plans for high voltage substations.Review shop drawings, vendor quotes and perform bid evaluations.Develop construction release documents.Experience 500KV - 13.8KV substations, varying voltage classesExperience with open air and/or GISExperience with designing different types of bus configurationsRaceway drawings, grounding drawings, plan and section drawingsManages budget, schedule, and quality requirements.
