School Counselor

Salary: In accordance with CBA

Reports to: Building Principal and Director of Compliance

Hours: In accordance with District scheduled school day

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Help students attain an optimum level of personal and social adjustment. In order to coordinate a comprehensive counseling program, the School Counselor will work closely with the Principal, other administrators and the teachers.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Monitor students' progress through communications with the teachers and report to parents weekly.
  2. Assist and hold Student Attendance Improvement Meetings with truant students, their families and outside agencies.
  3. Possess knowledge of required courses as per PA school code.
  4. Ensure all high school students' credits are correct and meet with each student and their family to discuss a graduation plan.
  5. Provide individual counseling and group guidance to help students cope effectively with personal, social, academic, career, and family concerns.
  6. Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and supporting agencies concerning the needs and abilities of students.
  7. Implement a comprehensive student performance appraisal process by:
  • Selecting and administering appropriate ability, achievement, and interest tests.
  • Visiting with students and interviewing interested adults.
  • Interpreting results to students, teachers, administrators and parents.
  • Update and maintain confidential student records as per state and federal guidelines, including cumulative records and student files.
  • Identify students with special needs and make appropriate recommendations and referrals.
  • Implement an effective program of education and career planning,
  • Assist in a continuous program of student orientation.
  • Provide Social Emotional Learning (SEL) awareness and programs for all students.
  • Ensure an engaging and positive environment that encourages student involvement.
  • Provide counseling to students who are tardy, truant or absent.
  • Ability to advocate for students at individual education plan meetings, student study teams and at school attendance review boards, as necessary.
  • Follow and enforce all CDC and DOH guidelines.
  • All other duties as assigned by the superintendent or his/her designee.
  • REQUIREMENTS:

    1. Must possess an active Pennsylvania School Counselor certification.
    2. Masters degree from an accredited college/university.
    3. Possess strong computer technology skills.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    1. Ability to reach above and below the waist
    2. Ability to use fingers to pick, feel and grasp objects.
    3. Some stooping, bending and twisting of the body required.
    4. Ability to lift and/or carry supplies and/or papers weighing no more than 20 lbs.
    5. Ability to sit, stand, walk or move throughout the building and/or office, often for extended periods of the workday.

    SENSORY ABILITY:

    1. Visual acuity.
    2. Auditory acuity.
