Department Overview

The Hematology, Oncology & Bone Marrow Transplant unit operates 24/7 and provides exceptional care to patients with life‑threatening diseases such as cancer, immune disorders, and blood disorders. Patients range from birth to 20 years old, and the unit has 21 beds.

Role Overview

The Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/Bone Marrow Transplant (PHOT) unit provides intermediate level of care to patients ages 0‑18. Obstetric patients < 18 with a new Hem/Onc/BMT diagnosis are evaluated case‑by‑case. Patients with specific pediatric oncology diagnoses may be followed until age 25. Presenting diagnoses include leukemia, brain tumors, bone tumors, sarcoma, lymphomas, blood diseases, immunological conditions, storage diseases, bone marrow transplants, and graft‑versus‑host disease. Nurses on this unit also support Hem/Onc/BMT patients in other units, including chemotherapy support and central line management.

Responsibilities

• Provide intermediate level of care for pediatric patients with hematology, oncology, or bone marrow transplant diagnoses. • Support Hem/Onc/BMT patients in all units, including chemotherapy administration, central line care, and BMT expertise. • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure safe, high‑quality care for patients and families.

Required Qualifications

• 2+ years RN experience in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology or Adult Oncology
• BSN graduate with a program accredited by CCNE, ACEN, or CNEA, completed within 30 days before start date
• ADN graduate with an accredited program, completed within 30 days before start date
• Associate‑degree nurse must enroll in a BSN program within 3 years of hire and complete within 5 years
• Current, unencumbered Oregon State Registered Nurse license
• BLS and PALS certification required; new hires will complete during orientation
• APHON/ONS chemotherapy knowledge; APHON must be obtained after start date
• Ability to perform essential functions with or without accommodation

Additional Details

Length of Orientation for Experienced Nurses

• External candidates: OHSU & Nursing New Employee Orientation for about a week
• Transition to Practice (TTP) or Fellowship Learning Pathway: 3 days‑26 weeks depending on care area; employment service agreement may apply
