Job Summary

The Registered Mammography Technologist produces high quality breast imaging procedures while following guidelines established by the ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists), ACR (American College of Radiology) and MQSA (Mammography Quality Standards Act and Program). They perform all screening, diagnostic, invasive, and DEXA (dual energy X‑ray absorptiometry) scans according to established protocols and procedures for interpretation by supervising physician.

Essential Functions

  • Performs all breast imaging and DEXA procedures.
  • Assists the radiologist in invasive breast procedures, ensuring aseptic technique and consent is obtained by the performing physician.
  • Correlates patient's clinical history with procedure, ensuring information is documented and available for use by a licensed provider, and conveys history prior to examination.
  • Selects and operates breast imaging equipment and associated devices to achieve desired results.
  • Selects appropriate radiographic technique exposure factors to produce quality diagnostic images.
  • Applies principles of radiation protection to minimize exposure to patient, self, and others.
  • Applies principles of patient safety during all aspects of mammographic procedures.
  • Provides patient education and discharge instructions.
  • Participates in the department's quality assessments and improvement plans.

Education

  • Associate's from an ARRT accredited institute (preferred).

Required Licensing & Certifications

  • Certification and Registration with ARRT (Diagnostic Radiology) – required.
  • Advanced modality registration in Mammography, ARRT – preferred, or must obtain within 1 year.
  • State Licensure – preferred, unless required by the state where the job is performed.
  • BLS Basic Life Support, American Heart Association – required at hire for Roper St Francis Healthcare locations; preferred at hire, required prior to independent patient care at BSMH.

Experience

  • 1 year experience as a registered mammography technologist – preferred.
