We are welcoming applicants to our Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Residency Program designed to nurture and empower the next generation of mental health professionals.
Residency Program Overview
The Residency program prepares the next generation of Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners to practice with confidence as specialists in child/adolescent mental health care. The next cohort is scheduled to begin in September 2026.
- Residency is a 9-12 month program for recent graduates or those who have not yet licensed practice experience.
- The program combines clinical experience with didactic learning to support the transition from graduate school to professional practice.
- Residents will gain tools and support to provide children and adolescents with cutting-edge diagnosis and treatment with personalized care within an interdisciplinary outpatient model.
- Residents will collaborate with colleagues to build professional relationships that support PMHNP practice.
- Upon successful completion, graduates may have opportunities to continue as senior members of the Blackbird medical team for at least 2 years following residency.

About the Role
Under the supervision of the Director of the Residency Program, you will deliver comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, treatment planning, and medication management for children, adolescents, and young adults. You will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to ensure high-quality care and make a meaningful difference in patients and families.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct psychiatric evaluations, assessments, and diagnoses; create individualized treatment plans for children and adolescents, including medications and other treatments as appropriate.
- Collaborate with psychotherapists and other clinicians on integrated treatment plans and ongoing medication management.
- Work from the Fredrick, Maryland clinic up to 2 days per week as needed.
- Meet with residency cohort and supervisor to discuss progress and challenges regularly.
- Provide education and consultation for patients and families.
- Manage diagnostic testing, including digital and lab results.
- Participate in weekly team and supervisory clinical meetings.
- Maintain thorough records and ensure HIPAA confidentiality.
- Perform other clinical-related activities as assigned.
Qualifications

Requirements:
- National certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP).
- Approximately 12 of 40 weekly hours during peak after-school hours (after 4 pm ET on weekdays) or any time on weekends.
- Work in person at the Fredrick, Maryland clinic up to 3 days per week as needed.
- Master’s degree from an accredited nursing program (PMHNP, Master’s in NP); graduates within the last ~12 months or with less than 1 year of PMHNP experience are preferred.
- Active PMHNP license and DEA in Virginia (or on track to obtain by residency start).
- Upon completion of the residency, participants join Blackbird Clinical Services for an additional 2-year period, for a total commitment of three years.
Salary Range: $100,000 – $112,000 USD
