Job Summary
Provides empathetic pharmacy consulting services to patients regarding the effective use of medications and drug interaction awareness. Offers preventive and clinical healthcare services, including immunizations, diagnostic testing, and patient outcome services. Ensures prescribed medications are compounded, reviewed, dispensed, and verified accurately according to regulatory guidelines and company policies. Manages an efficient pharmacy workflow and improves pharmacy financials, inventory, and patient experience. Manages pharmacy staff performance and engagement, ensuring professional development through training and performance management.
Job Responsibilities
Patient Experience
- Engages patients by greeting them and offering assistance with products and services, resolving issues promptly, and answering questions to ensure a positive experience.
- Models and shares customer service best practices with all team members to deliver a distinctive experience, including courtesy, curiosity, empathy, and inclusivity.
- Anticipates and proactively offers services, increasing awareness of Walgreens healthcare offerings and promoting a shift from transactional to interpersonal roles.
- Participates in community events as requested by Store Manager, Healthcare Supervisor, or District Manager.
Operations
- Counsels patients on medication use, side effects, interactions, privacy, generics, alternatives, and over‑the‑counter products; refers to medical providers as needed.
- Performs pharmacist tasks: compounding, drug therapy reviews, verification, and medication management.
- Accurately dispenses prescriptions as required.
- Ensures the pharmacy operates per regulations, policies, and standards; establishes efficient workflow, schedules staff, assigns roles, coordinates activities, and solicits team suggestions.
- Manages opening and closing, shift changes, and compliance with Good Faith Dispensing and controlled substance laws.
- Collaborates with Store Manager on strategic business opportunities.
- Maintains IT knowledge of pharmacy systems for workflow, billing, documentation, training, inventory, POS; supports staff and patients; finds productivity improvements.
- Ensures accurate insurance claim processing, resolves issues with insurers and providers, conducts audits.
- Follows up with medical providers to confirm prescriptions, dosages, refills, interactions, and allergies.
- Performs clinical and wellness services: immunizations, diagnostic testing, disease state management, and other healthcare services.
- Partners with support for patient registration, exception resolution; conducts virtual product reviews per procedures.
- Maintains pharmacy environment including repairs, cleaning, new equipment, layout changes.
- Prepares and submits required records, reports, and documentation to comply with state and federal laws.
People & Performance Management
- Collaborates with Store Manager on pharmacy staff hiring, discipline, termination, and employment law compliance.
- Establishes expectations, goals, promotes teamwork, fosters vision, monitors and rewards improvements.
- Manages performance reviews and training using correct processes and tools.
- Identifies high‑potential team members, collaborates on career progression.
- Addresses employee relations concerns, maintains morale, manages conflicts and relationships.
Training & Personal Development
- Maintains required licensing/credentialing/certification per federal and state regulations.
- Enhances knowledge of pharmacy and healthcare through journals, Walgreens publications, and communications.
- Follows up education credits, training modules.
- Seeks professional development by monitoring performance, soliciting feedback, and leveraging mentors and coaches.
Communications
- Supports Store Manager by communicating corporate health and wellness services or strategy info to pharmacy staff.
Business Performance Management
- Analyzes performance data: pharmacy financials, customer service, inventory; manages asset protection, inventory management, identifies trends and improvement opportunities.
Business Planning
- Develops and maintains relationships with local medical community; promotes pharmacy business growth.
- Supports Store Manager in expanding health and wellness awareness in the community.
Basic Qualifications
- BS in Pharmacy or Pharm D Degree from an accredited institution.
- Current pharmacist licensure in the states within the district.
- Certified Immunizer or willingness to become immunizer within 90 days of hire.
- At least 1 year pharmacy experience (prescription filling, recordkeeping, compliance, operations, software, insurance billing), state‑specific experience as required.
- Experience in prescription dispensing demonstrating strong knowledge of controlled substance laws.
- Average rating of at least 3.0 on leadership behaviors in last performance review and no written disciplinary actions in last 12 months (internal candidates only).
Preferred Qualifications
- Supervisory experience planning, organizing, and directing pharmacy staff.
- At least 6 months pharmacy experience with Walgreens.
- Average rating of 3.7 or higher on leadership behaviors in last performance review (internal candidates only).
