Position Information

Job Title: Part Time – General Counselor

Location: Yuba College service centers/campuses

Job Description:

Basic Function: Under the direction of the Vice President of Student Services or a designee, provide general counseling services in support of the college’s recruitment and retention efforts. The counselor will provide personal, career and educational counseling to students, participate in orientation, classroom presentations, workshops, assessment interpretation, outreach activities, evening assignments, and liaison duties with academic departments. The role includes curriculum development, student learning outcome assessment, professional activities, committee work, and intervention strategies for academically challenged students. It also involves working with electronic processes such as Curricunet, Tracdat, Degree‑Audit, and similar systems.

Required Duties: Demonstrate sensitivity to diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds. Responsibilities include:

  • Academic Advising/Educational Planning: Assist students with course selection and educational processes; provide direction regarding selection of educational major(s); provide information regarding transfer requirements; develop Student Educational Plans (SEPs); update and evaluate student progress.
  • Career/Vocational Counseling and Development: Assist students in clarifying life and career goals; provide vocational information; gather labor market data; maintain occupational trends; administer and interpret career assessment tools; provide job‑seeking skills and strategies.
  • Personal Counseling: Offer personal counseling on interpersonal relationships, communication skills, values, decision‑making, psychological/behavioral issues, chemical dependency, gender/sexuality concerns, health concerns, and referral to external agencies; provide crisis intervention or emergency counseling as needed.
  • Assessment and Interpretation: Ensure assessment/matriculation regulations are followed; administer and interpret assessment instruments; advise students based on basic skills assessment results.
  • Instruction: Teach Personal Development courses; develop curriculum; maintain records; present lectures; attend conferences and workshops; participate in high‑school outreach; serve as liaison with local high schools and post‑secondary institutions; participate in community events and provide bilingual translational assistance.
  • Student Advocacy/Development: Facilitate support groups and workshops; refer students to district and external resources; participate in orientation and committees.
  • District Programs: Participate in shared governance committees; liaise with counseling center and district units; assist in institutional planning.
  • Specialized Programs: Develop and coordinate specialized programs; evaluate activities.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or a related field.
  • OR equivalent qualifications, including an equivalency determination from the district prior to application filing.
  • California Community College life credential in the subject matter area of counseling (a license as an MFT is an alternative qualification).

Desired/Preferred Qualifications

Preference may be given to candidates with life credential or teaching experience that demonstrates the ability to provide general counseling services to community college students.

Physical Demands

Rank: Class I – VII (based on degree and teaching experience).

Salary and Benefits

Part‑time positions less than .60 FTE are not entitled to district paid fringe benefits.
