Job Overview
The Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant, Outpatient is responsible for providing medical care and treatment to patients. Performs physical examinations and preventative health measures within the prescribed guidelines and instructions of the physician. Plans a treatment strategy to meet identified needs, evaluates responses to nursing and medical interventions.
Responsibilities
- Provide quality outpatient care to neurosurgery patients.
- Perform physical examinations, assess patients, and manage preventative health measures.
- Develop and implement treatment strategies in accordance with physician instructions.
- Maintain accurate patient and business records, complete encounters, and document clinical care.
- Respond promptly to patient calls and messages and complete same-day response.
- Observe for signs of abuse/neglect and report immediately.
- Recognize emergencies and respond per organizational policy.
- Coordinate plans of care and periodically review and update plans.
- Assist with safety, infection control, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Participate in daily huddles, staff meetings and provider meetings.
- Contribute to hiring, disciplinary action, and termination decisions of clinical personnel.
Preferred Experience
Prior experience as a neurosurgery provider is preferred.
Qualifications
- Master's Degree from an approved Nurse Practitioner Program or completion of an accredited Physician Assistant Program (MS-PAS).
- Registered Nursing License (RN) and/or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or Current PA License in the State of Louisiana.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) for PA applicants.
Licenses and Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support) – American Heart Association
- Registered Nursing License (RN) – Louisiana State Board of Nursing
- Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) – Louisiana State Board of Nursing (or PA License) – Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners
- PA Certification – National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
Skills and Abilities
- Medical clinical skills and procedural competence.
- Proficient computer and electronic health record skills.
- Knowledge of ICD‑10 and CPT‑4 coding.
- Excellent communication and patient relationship skills.
