As a Surgical Physician Assistant, you will practice medicine under the supervision of a physician, providing diagnostic, therapeutic, surgical, and preventative care. You will function as a first assistant during major surgical procedures and manage patients across ambulatory, operating room, and inpatient settings.
Key Responsibilities
- Surgical Assistance: Act as a first or second assistant during major surgeries; assist with sutures, drainage tubes, and other intraoperative tasks as needed.
- Clinical Practice: Conduct patient histories, physical exams, and daily rounds.
- Patient Management: Develop holistic plans of care, order and interpret laboratory tests/x-rays, and manage pre- and post-operative preparations.
- Collaboration: Communicate treatment plans between attending physicians, consultants, nursing staff, and the interdisciplinary team.
- Education: Counsel patients and their families on procedures, discharge instructions, and follow-up care.
Requirements
- Education: Master’s degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program.
- Experience: Typically 1–3 years of experience as a Physician Assistant is required, with a preference for surgical experience. New grads are welcome to apply.
Licensure
- Current license as a Physician Assistant in Tennessee or the ability to obtain licensure.
- Board Certification by the NCCPA.
- Physical Demands: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., react quickly to emergencies, and maintain good hand-eye coordination.
