Overview
DMC Sinai‑Grace Hospital is DMC’s largest hospital, offering a comprehensive heart center, cancer care, gerontology, emergency medicine, obstetrics/gynecology and cosmetic services. The joint replacement program features a revolutionary minimally invasive knee and hip replacement surgery that attracts patients from all over the country. The hospital operates more than 21 outpatient care sites and ambulatory surgery centers throughout Wayne and Oakland Counties and is one of 10 hospitals nationwide to receive a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant for cardiac care standards.
Summary
Under general supervision and following established policies and procedures, the Mammography Technologist performs diagnostic mammographic exams using appropriate imaging equipment, verifies patient identity, reviews the medical record for appropriateness of the exam or procedure, and ensures all aspects of patient care and safety are met.
Responsibilities
- Interview patients to obtain, verify, or update medical history and assess risk factors such as medications, pregnancy, and psychological indicators.
- Explain the procedure to patients, including side effects of pharmaceuticals administered, risks, benefits, alternatives, and follow‑up instructions.
- Set up equipment and acquire appropriate images according to the script; review images, note initial observations, document exceptions from established protocols, and communicate data to the radiologist.
- Recognize and respond to medical emergencies as appropriate; provide physician‑prescribed post‑care instructions to patients.
- Participate in process improvement activities within radiology practice, including quality of care, patient flow, reject‑repeat analysis, and patient satisfaction.
- Provide imaging education to residents, student technologists, and new employees.
- Be available for call/stand‑by as required by the department; may perform the duties of a Radiologic Technologist as needed.
Qualifications
- Registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Mammography (M).
- Have or successfully complete American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support – Healthcare Provider (BLS) training by the end of the orientation period.
- Possess analytical and clinical skills to determine the most age‑appropriate method of providing requested radiographs specific to a patient’s physical ability and/or limitations.
- Demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with patients who may be under physical or emotional stress, comprehend and follow physicians’ verbal and written requests, and work effectively in a culturally diverse environment.
- Show technical knowledge to operate all specialized equipment and computers.
- Work productively in a complex environment, handling multiple or changing priorities.
- Understand American College of Radiology and MQSA requirements for accreditation.
- Maintain physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and positioning of patients; possess manual dexterity and visual acuity to operate imaging equipment and supplies to produce images of acceptable diagnostic quality.
