Lead Teaching Assistant

Lead Teaching Assistant position provides opportunities to qualified Teaching Assistants for professional advancement, growth, and leadership. This position offers the opportunity to provide support to unit members new to the district and/or working with our student population. Lead Teaching Assistants continue to accrue seniority in Teaching Assistant tenure area and have the right to return to their previous position at the completion of a two-year tenure (s). As a part of modeling Teacher Assistant skills, the Lead Teaching Assistants may provide instructional support services to students under the general supervision of a licensed or certified teacher. Mentor Teaching Assistants may demonstrate individual direct instructional support to students as they develop social, communication and academic skills. Lead Teaching Assistants may train new Teaching Assistants/Paraprofessionals in devising and implementing a motivational and behavior management system. Lead Teaching Assistants may also assist the new or current Teaching Assistants in intervention strategies in support of student development and growth.

Responsibilities

Provides critical support to all Paraprofessionals and Teaching Assistants to enhance their instruction and orient them to the school community. Partners with other educator to model effective support strategies directly or indirectly to students. Supports the development of new unit members in their positions. Models and builds skill in effective communication with teaching assistant, paraprofessionals, and instructional team, including classroom teacher, other professional staff, and parents. Assists in providing 1:1 support to both teaching assistants and paraprofessionals in a supportive environment and in a cooperative effort with all staff. May assist teaching assistant and classroom teacher in implementing strategies for students exhibiting unique communication, emotional, behavioral, and learning challenges. Lead Teaching Assistant responds to any other duties as directed by the Executive Director and Academy Director of the Early Childhood Department.

Qualifications

Five (5) years Teaching Assistant experience Evidence of ongoing professional development Strong communication skills Proficiency in using and understanding technology. An understanding of how to work with diverse student learners. Teaching Assistant Certification Those selected must maintain NYS certification while in title.
