Position description

The Instagram & Facebook Coordinator helps bring Women in Science PDX's stories, events, and initiatives to life across our Instagram and Facebook communities. Working from an established content calendar, Canva graphics, and approved messaging, you'll use AI tools to draft platform-specific copy, refine it to match the WIS PDX voice, and publish engaging content that supports our events, programs, and initiatives. While most content is planned in advance, we welcome volunteers who enjoy contributing fresh ideas or creating occasional original posts—but it's never expected.

Key Position Responsibilities

  • Schedule and publish approved content to Instagram and Facebook using WIS PDX's social media management tools.
  • Use AI tools to draft platform-appropriate captions, then review and refine them to ensure they are accurate, engaging, and aligned with the WIS PDX brand voice.
  • Manage Facebook Events, including creating new events, updating existing events, and sharing them within relevant WIS PDX communities.
  • Monitor comments, messages, and community interactions, escalating questions or concerns to the Communications Chair or Social Media Strategist when appropriate.
  • Collaborate with the Social Media Strategist to identify opportunities for improved engagement and community growth.
  • Learn and apply platform-specific best practices when adapting content for Instagram and Facebook, including formatting, hashtags, accessibility, and audience engagement.
  • Suggest ideas for original posts, campaigns, or content series that support WIS PDX's mission (optional).
  • Attend monthly Communications Committee meetings.

Ideal Experience

We're looking for someone who enjoys social media and community engagement. Helpful experience includes:

  • Personal or professional experience using Instagram and Facebook
  • Familiarity with Buffer or a willingness to learn
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Interest in nonprofit communications, marketing, or community building

Professional social media experience is not required . We'll provide the tools, templates, and guidance you need to succeed.

What You'll Gain

As the Instagram & Facebook Coordinator, you'll have the opportunity to:

  • Gain hands-on experience using AI-assisted workflows, social media planning, and digital communications in a nonprofit setting.
  • Learn platform-specific best practices, audience engagement strategies, and nonprofit communications.
  • Develop skills in content adaptation, social media planning, and digital community management.
  • Build experience working within an established brand strategy while contributing your own creative ideas.
  • Make a meaningful impact by helping connect and grow Portland's STEM community.
