Scion Staffing has been engaged to conduct a search for an HR Business Partner for a well-established, mission-driven nonprofit organization in Portland, Oregon. This is a full-time opportunity offering a salary of $90,000–$95,000, depending on experience, for an HR professional who enjoys partnering with leaders, navigating complex employee relations matters, and developing people-focused solutions that strengthen organizational culture and performance.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The HR Business Partner will serve as a trusted advisor to managers and organizational leaders, providing both strategic and hands-on HR guidance across employee relations, performance management, compliance, leadership development, employee engagement, and organizational change.

This position will play an important role in helping leaders navigate complex workplace situations while ensuring HR practices remain consistent, equitable, and compliant with applicable employment laws. The HR Business Partner will also contribute to broader people initiatives, including training, workforce engagement, HR process improvements, protected leave administration, and organizational planning.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as a trusted HR advisor to managers and leaders, providing coaching and guidance on employee relations, performance management, conflict resolution, organizational policies, and complex workplace matters.
  • Manage employee relations concerns from assessment through resolution, including workplace investigations, mediation, corrective action, performance improvement, and separation processes.
  • Interpret and apply federal, state, and local employment laws and HR best practices while proactively identifying and mitigating organizational and employee-related risk.
  • Develop and support employee engagement, leadership development, recognition, and training initiatives that strengthen workplace culture, retention, and organizational effectiveness.
  • Partner with the HR team on protected leave administration, HR policies, compliance audits, HRIS improvements, workflow automation, and other initiatives designed to improve the employee experience and HR operations.
  • Support organizational change and strategic initiatives by collaborating across departments, providing clear communication, and helping leaders successfully navigate evolving workforce and operational needs.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or a related field required
  • 1–3+ years of strategic HR experience, with demonstrated experience advising managers and organizational leaders
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local employment laws and experience applying HR policies and regulations to workplace situations
  • Demonstrated experience with employee relations, workplace investigations, performance management, conflict resolution, and risk mitigation
  • Excellent communication, coaching, analytical, and relationship-building skills with the ability to establish credibility across all levels of an organization
  • Strong discretion and professional judgment when handling confidential employee information and sensitive workplace matters
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and experience working with HR systems and technology
  • SPHR or SHRM-SCP certification strongly preferred
  • Previous nonprofit and/or human services experience strongly preferred

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This is a full-time, exempt position with a primarily office-based schedule and limited remote work flexibility. The HR Business Partner will periodically travel to other organizational locations to support employees and operational needs. Standard hours are generally Monday through Friday, with occasional additional hours during periods of increased HR activity or organizational deadlines.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
