What We're Looking For

This opportunity is for a Senior Project Engineer to serve on a General Engineering Contract. The selected candidate will be embedded with the HNTB project manager at the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority office. This role entails supporting scoping, production, and delivery of capital projects. The position consults with the project manager to perform research, development, calculations, design, and delivery. It applies engineering techniques, procedures, and design criteria for complex and cross‑discipline projects. It leverages technical knowledge and experience to address design‑related issues or concerns, working closely with the project manager through creative problem‑solving, interacting with clients, and completing tasks to meet the project schedule. It develops conceptual and detailed designs and calculations to support project completion using current drawing and technical tools, programs, and software. It may mentor, train, and review the work of junior engineer staff and provide constructive feedback. As a member of the team, the engineer will contribute to the successful delivery of a diverse range of projects for HNTB’s clients.

What You'll Do

  • Use senior‑level technical expertise to consider a broad range of engineering solutions.
  • Be responsible for discipline‑specific planning, work distribution, leadership, and adherence to schedule and budget on complex or unusual engineering projects.
  • Assist in marketing responsibilities, including proposal generation.
  • Develop scope of work and level of effort, managing adherence to scope and budget within the discipline.
  • Oversee completeness and accuracy of the project team’s work within the technical discipline.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to team members to achieve overall objectives on complex or unusual engineering projects.
  • Coordinate technical aspects of the project with client counterparts and teaming partners at staff level for work within the discipline on complex or unusual engineering projects.
  • Lead discipline delivery on larger, multi‑disciplinary projects and work closely with other disciplines on multi‑disciplinary projects.
  • Assist with coordination and planning of schedules, hours, and distribution of work for other disciplines on multi‑disciplinary projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and eight years of relevant experience.
  • Master’s degree in Engineering and seven years of relevant experience.
  • PhD in Engineering and six years of relevant experience.

  • Excellent technical knowledge and quality work in multiple‑discipline projects.
  • Prioritization of tasks and accountability to the project team to deliver high‑quality, on‑time projects within budget and scope.
  • Vision beyond the task at hand and anticipation of risks and impacts of actions.
  • Understanding and support of objectives that lead to successful project delivery, recognizing how multiple disciplines influence development.
  • Application of an accrued knowledge base to innovate project efficiencies.
  • Use of refined technical skills to identify problems, develop appropriate solutions, and make sound decisions, knowing what tools to use for effective outcomes on projects.

What We Prefer

  • Experience in project scoping and delivery of THEA and/or FDOT projects.
  • Strong understanding of the FDOT Design Manual and FDOT Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) or American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) credential, depending on discipline.
  • Master’s degree in Engineering.
  • Ten years of relevant experience.
