Mill Engineer Opportunity at Minnesota Ore Operations – Minntac

U. S. Steel has an exciting opportunity for a Mill Engineer to join Minnesota Ore Operations – Minntac. This position offers an exciting opportunity to apply your engineering expertise, analytical thinking, and collaborative skills to optimize Agglomerating operations critical to our iron ore pellet production. Here you will exercise your skills and creativity to help solve today's challenges around operating efficiency, emerging digital technologies, and sustainability.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Overseeing the five indurating lines and monitoring their performance and maintenance needs Conduct daily process monitoring, hands-on troubleshooting, and collaboration with the operating team to ensure stable and efficient line performance
  • Develop and implement process improvements and capital projects to enhance line efficiency, reduce downtime, and lower unit costs while managing project milestones and resource requirements
  • Utilize data analytics tools to perform root cause analysis of process upsets and equipment failures, implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence
  • Collaborate with maintenance, metallurgy, and operations teams to establish and optimize preventive maintenance programs for mill equipment
  • Support the development of operational standards, work instructions, and training materials to promote consistent best practices in Agglomerator Process
  • Drive a continuous improvement culture utilizing Lean Six Sigma and other problem-solving methodologies to identify and eliminate waste in the milling process
  • Assist with business planning, budgeting, and forecasting using process data and operational trends
  • Assist in the SAMP repair process

Candidate must demonstrate:

  • Ability to work closely with multidisciplinary groups including operations, maintenance, and metallurgy to drive results
  • Excellent computer, communication, and writing skills, as well as an interest in hands-on assignments in a manufacturing environment
  • Capability to analyze, interpret, and communicate process data related to the Agglomerator process
  • Ability to apply statistical methods and analysis to process data for performance optimization
  • Safety as a core value in all aspects of work

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Minerals Processing Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field or 8+ years mining experience
  • This is a safety sensitive position requiring drug and alcohol testing
  • Must be authorized to work in the US without sponsorship

Preferred Skills:

  • A strong record of team, project, and/or people leadership in a work setting and/or extracurricular activities
  • Previous work experience in minerals processing, comminution, or a similar mining/processing environment
  • Hands-on experience with AG/SAG or ball mill operations, including liner management and media optimization
  • Familiarity with process control systems (DCS/SCADA) and data historian tools used in mill operations
  • A willingness to take initiative to understand the business and identify improvement opportunities
  • An aptitude for problem solving; strong writing and verbal communication skills
  • A strong commitment to excellence and to personal and professional growth
  • Must be resourceful, responsible, tenacious, curious, independent, confident, and high energy
  • The ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a dynamic operating environment
  • Leadership and strong decision-making skills
  • Ability to think and act both strategically and tactically
  • Lean Six Sigma experience and/or certification

The base salary of $71,009 to $106,514 is a good faith estimate. Based on candidate skills/experience the final offer may be lower/higher.
