Operational Electrical Engineer

Oxy produces, markets and transports oil and natural gas while investing in lower‑carbon technologies. The Operational Electrical Engineer provides comprehensive support for all field electrical infrastructure, ensuring the health and safety of employees and protecting the environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide electrical engineering support for power distribution equipment, including start‑up and troubleshooting for high, medium, and low voltage substations, transformers, switchgear, motor control centers, protective relays, variable frequency drives, soft starters, and motors.
  • Collaborate in the design phase for minor and major projects, performing load flow, short circuit, relay coordination, arc flash, motor start, and harmonic studies using Windmil or ETAP software.
  • Develop and validate protective relay programs for SEL or Multilin relays (651R/710/351/751/387/787) and oversee relay testing via current injection using Doble.
  • Set low voltage circuit breaker settings and prepare protection coordination studies with ETAP or EasyPower.
  • Offer expertise in solid‑state power electronic devices, low and medium voltage soft starts, variable frequency drives (480V to 12.47kV), and excitation controls for large synchronous motors.
  • Conduct system modeling to optimize efficiency, employing capacitor banks and voltage regulators within power distribution networks.
  • Manage factory acceptance testing for low and medium voltage electrical apparatus and facilitate start‑up procedures for projects of varying scale.
  • Review test outcomes for high and low voltage cables and motors, transformer tests (CT polarity/ratio, insulation, impulse, heating, applied, and induced voltage), switchgear and breaker testing covering timing, contact resistance, and insulation performance on both low and high voltage systems.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 8 years’ experience in electrical engineering.
  • At least 5 years of direct field experience.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Extensive background in commissioning electrical projects and substations up to 230kV, including switchgear from 2.4kV to 24.9kV.
  • Knowledge of power electronics and motor controls, including variable frequency drives, soft starts, and across‑the‑line starters.
  • Expertise in relay settings and programming for distribution feeders, transmission lines, transformers, reclosers, and motors, with proficiency in Schweitzer relays.
  • Experience with large motors (exceeding 5,000HP) and synchronous motors.
  • Exceptional communication skills—verbal, written, listening, and presentation.
  • Strong analytical capabilities with proven effectiveness in resolving highly complex issues.
  • Familiarity with root cause analysis related to electrical failures.
  • Thorough understanding of electrical safety standards as outlined in NFPA70E.
  • Practical knowledge in calculating arc flash hazards using IEEE1584 guidelines.
  • Skilled in load transfer and switching at voltages from 480V to 230,000V, including development of field‑ready switching procedures.
  • Knowledge of symmetrical components and fault analysis.

Additional Information

  • Position is primarily field‑based, requiring over 60% of working hours to be spent in the field.
  • Assignments may involve travel up to 200 miles from the home location; the employee is expected to return home nearly every day.
  • Requires ability to work efficiently without direct supervision.
  • Company car will be provided for field work and daily commute.
