With over 100 years of innovation in sustainable infrastructure and our expertise in engineering, procurement, consulting and construction, together we are building a world of difference.In this role you will have the opportunity to:Function as a technical lead substation design engineer for FACTS projects involving (distribution, sub transmission and transmission level voltage classes)Utilize resources available for safety and regulatory standards (IEEE, IEC, NEC, NESC, NERC, ISO/RTO) to effectively define project requirements, review project deliverables (physical, P&C, power system design) and collaborate with owner and OEM resources (subject matter experts, internal engineering, and project management)Work on other aspects of design that are non-standard for substation engineers, so the person should be willing to conduct research to locate required white papers, brochures, publications, or standards and bring themselves up to speedConvey technical information to the project team, which may include stakeholders with varying levels of technical expertiseLead internal discussions with the owner engineering team to close out technical or project management topicsBlack & Veatch is ranked #4 overall in power by Engineering News-Record (2025). Our Technology, Commercial & Industrial Team has specialized capabilities focused on the latest needs for clients in a fast-growth technology-led arena of advanced manufacturing, and generative AI computing including gigafactories, bio/ag tech, data centers and distributed infrastructure.Key responsibilities include:Continues developing knowledge and may provide guidance and direction on design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes and B&V policiesProvides technical guidance to others regarding projects and disciplinesIndependently applies knowledge and complies with B&V quality program relative to assigned tasksMay be responsible for ensuring compliance with B&V quality programProvides related guidance and direction to othersSupports continuous improvement and change management effortsPrepares a variety of engineering deliverables for larger or multiple projectsPerforms research and develops recommendations for equipment and/or materials selectionMay oversee collection, assimilation, and management of data for engineering workPrepares engineering calculations following standard methods and principlesPrepares and manages assigned budget, schedule, and quality requirementsIndependently applies advanced engineering techniques and analysis problems and methodsActively delegates appropriate tasks to lower level team members to develop depth of project execution staffReviews lower level engineering work or assignmentsIs responsible for one or more of the following: leading production teams; coordinating multiple discipline activity; and serving as the responsible charge for a projectActively coordinates with all other internal/external team members on moderately complex projectsResponsible for assisting with identification of key client interests and drivers on high voltage substation projectsCommunicates client interests and drivers to project team members and develops approaches to accommodate these concerns in the performance of the work on high voltage substation projectsProvides support to business development or pursuit activities and may offer other services to clientsRecognized as a technical specialist and has knowledge and skill set to provide consultation and guidance to project teams in a particular practice areaMay design a complete project or support multiple projects on the complex technical challengesActively fosters knowledge management and provides mentoringMay develop and apply advanced engineering concepts and approaches to unique engineering problemsTypically assists with performance management process, mentoring, recognition, and any corrective actions requiredMay participate in career planning, and learning and developmentActively mentors lower level professionals and identifies successors to train in the specifics of their roleMay assist with resource management strategyMay have responsibility of engineering resources for small groups of a single disciplineMay be accountable for some administrative responsibilities that include but aren't limited to: ensuring policies, procedures and processes are effectively implemented and communicated for work group. Approving timesheets and expense reportsPreferred qualifications include:High voltage (HV) substation design experience – Physical and/or Protection & ControlsProject lead and technical specialist experience overseeing utility substation clients and projectsQA/QC Reviews – Quality Assurance/Quality ChecksExperience coordinating and communicating with Clients, Multidisciplinary Leads and Project ManagersProfessional Engineer (PE) LicenseProficient with Bluebeam Revu and Microsoft Office Programs (such as Outlook, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.)Minimum qualifications include:Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from either a recognized accredited program in their home country or the country in which the professional is practicingMinimum of 5 years related work experienceCompensation transparency: State of Colorado: $120,406 - $201,080 State of Minnesota: $114,933 - $191,940 Salary Plan ENG: Engineering Job Grade 016
