Diesel MechanicSalary Range $32.00 Hourly Level Experienced Position Type Full-Time/Part-Time Job Shift Any Education Level High School Travel Percentage Up to 50% Category OtherDescriptionJob Description:The City of Detroit is seeking skilled Diesel Mechanics to join our dedicated team responsible for servicing and maintaining a fleet of vehicles critical to city operations, including police, fire, waste management, snowplows, rear loaders, and side loaders. The successful candidates will initially work full-time for the first 4 to 6 weeks, after which the position will transition to an on-call role, providing flexibility while still serving the community's needs.Key Responsibilities:Perform diagnostics, repairs, and maintenance on a variety of diesel vehicles and equipment.Conduct routine inspections to ensure the safety and reliability of vehicles.Troubleshoot and repair issues related to heavy-duty engines, braking systems, suspension and steering, and electrical systems.Maintain accurate records of service performed and parts used.Collaborate with other team members to ensure efficient workflow and timely completion of repairs.Follow all safety protocols and maintain a clean and organized work environment.Job Prerequisites, Licenses, & Certifications:Must be presently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.State of Michigan Class "B" commercial driver's license (with B endorsement) is preferred.Must be State certified in 2 or more of the following areas:HD Engine RepairHD Braking SystemsHD Suspension & Steering SystemsHD Electrical SystemsCandidates must possess their own small and large hand tools, rolling tool storage, and power/air tools necessary to perform all assigned work.Qualifications:High school diploma or equivalent; further technical training or certification in diesel mechanics is preferred.Proven experience as a diesel mechanic or in a similar role.Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.Ability to work independently and as part of a team.What We Offer:Competitive pay and benefits package.Opportunity to serve the community and make a difference.Flexible work schedule after the initial full-time period.
