Engineering Manager – Design Engineering

Salary: $130,000–$160,000 + discretionary bonus (up to 15%)

About the Role
We are seeking an Engineering Manager – Design Engineering to lead the day-to-day execution of design engineering activities across multiple customer projects and product lines.
This role will lead a team of engineers and designers while ensuring engineering deliverables—including design packages, 3D models, customer submittals, fabrication drawings, and engineering BOMs—are completed accurately, on schedule, and in accordance with customer and manufacturing requirements.
The Engineering Manager will work closely with Project Management, Structural Engineering, Manufacturing, Procurement, Sales Engineering, and customers to resolve technical issues, manage priorities, and ensure successful project delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Project & Design Engineering
- Lead design engineering execution across multiple concurrent projects.
- Translate customer requirements, specifications, layouts, and design criteria into complete engineering deliverables.
- Develop and maintain engineering schedules aligned with customer approvals, procurement, and manufacturing timelines.
- Ensure drawings, models, submittals, and engineering BOMs are accurate and delivered on time.
- Identify technical, resource, and schedule risks and develop recovery plans.
- Lead technical problem-solving throughout design, procurement, fabrication, and installation.
- Manage engineering changes and ensure proper documentation and communication.
Team Leadership
- Lead, coach, and develop engineers, designers, and engineering leads.
- Assign projects based on priorities, complexity, capacity, and individual capabilities.
- Establish clear ownership, deadlines, and performance expectations.
- Conduct workload and project-status reviews.
- Address quality, responsiveness, performance, and accountability issues.
- Support recruiting, onboarding, training, succession planning, and team development.
Design Quality & Governance
- Establish consistent design standards, review procedures, checklists, and release controls.
- Ensure designs meet customer requirements, engineering standards, applicable codes, and manufacturing capabilities.
- Coordinate structural reviews and approvals before engineering release.
- Ensure customer comments and design changes are properly incorporated and closed.
- Reduce design errors, rework, omissions, and late-stage changes through effective planning and reviews.
BOM & Engineering Release
- Ensure engineering BOMs are complete, accurate, and aligned with approved drawings and models.
- Coordinate part numbers, revisions, BOM approvals, ERP releases, and engineering documentation.
- Work closely with Procurement, Manufacturing, Costing, Engineering Services, and plant teams.
- Investigate BOM discrepancies and implement corrective actions.
Cross-Functional & Customer Collaboration
- Partner with Project Management to manage priorities, milestones, dependencies, and commitments.
- Work with Sales Engineering to transition customer scope into execution.
- Coordinate with Structural Engineering on calculations, connections, and technical approvals.
- Engage Procurement on long-lead and technically critical components.
- Partner with Manufacturing and DFM teams to ensure designs are practical and production-ready.
- Participate in customer design reviews and technical discussions.
Continuous Improvement
- Track engineering performance, schedule adherence, drawing/BOM accuracy, rework, engineering changes, and resource utilization.
- Lead root-cause analysis and corrective actions for recurring issues.
- Improve engineering workflows, tools, templates, automation, and documentation.
- Support capacity planning, resource forecasting, and strategic engineering initiatives.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field.
- 7–10 years of progressive engineering experience.
- At least 3 years of engineering leadership or people-management experience.
- Experience managing multiple complex engineering projects simultaneously.
- Strong knowledge of:
- Design release and configuration control
- Engineering BOMs
- Manufacturing/fabrication drawings
- Engineering change management
- Design for Manufacturing & Assembly (DFMA)
- Experience working with Manufacturing, Procurement, Project Management, and customer-facing teams.
- Proficiency with 3D CAD and engineering document-management systems.
- Experience with Autodesk Inventor, Vault, Revit, AutoCAD, or similar platforms is preferred.
- ERP/MRP and BOM/part-number release experience preferred.
- Experience with data-center infrastructure, modular construction, sheet-metal fabrication, structural systems, containment, or mechanical systems is a plus.
