What You Will Do

The Deputy Legal Counsel will become part of our eight‑member team of attorneys and support staff who advise the Governor on legal and policy challenges across a wide range of areas—including criminal law, health care, education, the economy, energy, natural resources, and ethics. You will develop creative solutions, conduct research and analysis of complex statutes and case law, provide actionable legal advice within short timelines, communicate opinions orally and in writing, engage with stakeholders, and represent the Governor where appropriate. The role requires a proactive, collaborative mindset and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Minimum Qualifications

• Admitted to a state bar and in good standing at the time of application.
• Experience advising organizational leaders and complex matters.
• Commitment to public service and Colorado.
• Excellent research, writing, and interpersonal skills; consultative and persuasive communication.
• Curiosity to learn new legal areas and experience in critical and creative thinking.
• Strong work ethic and ability to manage several diverse projects simultaneously, delivering under tight deadlines.
• Experience working in government or politics.
• Strong people skills, with experience working effectively with diverse constituencies and a focus on equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Conditions of Employment

Applicants must pass a thorough background check prior to employment and reside in Colorado once employed. The position is unclassified, at‑will. Due to the upcoming gubernatorial transition, any extension or continuation beyond January 13, 2027 will be at the sole discretion of the next administration.
