Position Overview

This role administers anesthesia to patients during surgical, obstetrical, and other procedures under physician supervision in a collaborative model including residents, fellows, attendings, and staff.

Education

Required – Master’s degree from a school of nurse anesthesia accredited by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA).

Work Experience

Required – None.

Certifications

  • License as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in the state of practice
  • Certification through the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA)
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Certification from the American Heart Association

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)

  • Computer skills and dexterity for data entry and retrieval of patient information
  • Proficiency with Windows-style applications and keyboard
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally
  • Ability to work a flexible work schedule (24/7, weekend, holiday, on call)

Job Duties

  • Documents patient procedures and incidents
  • Assesses patient before, during, and after administering anesthesia
  • Ensures patient safety and administers anesthesia following accepted practice techniques
  • Acts as a liaison to surgeons, anesthesiologists, co‑workers, patients, and families
  • Participates in department quality assurance initiatives and activities of professional development
  • Adapts communication style to the specific patient population, including privacy considerations and clarifying procedures
  • Performs other related duties as required

Physical and Environmental Demands

Medium work – ability to lift and move objects ranging from 20 to 50 pounds occasionally and 10 to 25 pounds frequently. Must stand for prolonged periods, work in patient care areas, and handle exposure to blood, bodily fluids, tissues, and hazardous medications. Reasonable accommodations may be made for disabilities.
