Anesthesia Technician
Hours: 1:30 PM - 10:30 PM; Includes holidays, weekends, on-call, and callback as needed. This is a 1-year contract position.
Specific Responsibilities
- Patient Care Assistance (20%): Aid in the care of patients undergoing anesthesia, including the preparation of anesthesia equipment prior to patient arrival, placement of anesthesia monitors, maintaining cleanliness of equipment, ensuring availability of specialized anesthesia supplies, and setting up medications and supplies as applicable. Communicate continuously with anesthesiologists, residents, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs), and other anesthesia technologists to meet operational needs throughout the day. Assist clinicians with challenging intubations and central line catheter placements.
- Equipment Operation and Participation (20%): Operate the cell-saver machine, track lab reports, and assist in advanced surgical cases, including cardiac, liver transplant, vascular, thoracic, and trauma surgeries. Collaborate with the service-specific faculty Division Chief in the respective specialty and provide on-call coverage as necessary.
- Equipment Maintenance (20%): Ensure that anesthesia equipment is functioning properly and that preventive maintenance is carried out. Set up and operate sophisticated equipment while performing advanced troubleshooting. Serve as the key resource for the use and maintenance of specialized equipment.
- Training and Development (15%): Support the Chief Anesthesia Technologist in developing and implementing in-service training programs. Assist in training staff on the roles and responsibilities associated with being an anesthesia technologist.
- Anesthesia Equipment Setup and Troubleshooting (15%): Conduct equipment setup and troubleshooting, including testing infusion pumps, nerve stimulators, defibrillators, transport monitors, calibrating anesthesia machines, and connecting fiberoptic bronchoscopes to video monitors.
- Room Setup and Support (5%): Prepare rooms between cases, manage cart setups throughout the day, and provide full service setup at day's end. Collaborate with other units to ensure the availability of specialized anesthesia equipment and assist with ectopic procedures for anesthesia care, ensuring appropriate equipment is in place.
- Backup Support (5%): Provide backup support to the shift supervisor during their absence due to vacation or illness. Complete additional tasks as assigned by the Shift Supervisor, Chief Anesthesia Technologist, or Operations Manager.
Required Qualifications
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Two years of experience as an Anesthesia Technician.
Preferred Qualifications
- A four-year college education, including related technical training; or a two-year college education with technical training closely related to this position and two years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Certification by the registry of the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists or other nationally recognized professional certifying body is preferred.
Behavior Characteristics
- Experience: Two (2) years of experience highly desired.
- BLS certification from the American Heart Association is preferred.
