ACC Network Director, Department of Athletics

Job Description Summary

The Director is responsible for the direction of assigned sports telecasts, as well as on-site management and administration of those telecasts/productions. The Technical Director will be assigned to an array of sports productions and works under the direction of the Assistant Athletic Director of Technology, Multimedia, and ACCN in conjunction with the ACC Network to plan and oversee the execution of those telecasts. This position is not eligible for sponsorship of non-immigrant or immigrant visa status through Wake Forest University. All eligible applicants are encouraged to apply.

Essential Functions

• Assists in the creative, personnel, and administrative direction for all aspects of production of assigned telecasts.
• Executes the full scope of directing activities of a full-time, temporary and/or matrixed staff of professionals and or students accountable for program development and production, for assigned sports/events.
• Directs all assigned technical and production personnel in most aspects of the productions.
• Facilitates the programming of the custom controls on the video switcher.
• Directs the on-site production arrangements for assigned sports remote telecasts; assists in establishing production schedules up to and through the event; establishing the format and sequence of events for the live broadcast; with the assigned director, determining the technical needs of each assigned telecast; oversees and controls the flow of production assets for assigned sports productions (Pre-Production activities).
• Leads the moment-to-moment editorial direction of the content of each assigned telecast with regards to, show content, storylines, replay angles, graphic content, and data integration via the scorebug and other graphical information in real time. (On-Site Management activities)
• Directs the telecast by cutting cameras, wipes, replays, and graphics with precision.
• Assists the Producer with making and overseeing the implementation of all production-related decisions at the venue before and during the event, e.g., how, when and what information to communicate to talent for optimum pacing of content, instant replays during breaks in action, application of graphics, whether to do post-event interviews and with whom. (Live Event Production responsibilities).
• Assists the producer with the direction of research on sports information to obtain materials necessary for the production of assigned sports events.
• Works with the Producer responsible for all personnel on-air in the control room and at the venues during broadcasts.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

• BA or BS in related field with three to five years related experience with the management of live broadcast operations.
• Has an established ability to create and produce compelling sports news remote telecast and live events.
• Generates and executes assigned remote productions, from concept to execution
• Has an established mastery of the sports production processes and the ability to produce assigned sports/events.
• Has a working knowledge of real-time sports productions and graphics.
• Has established currency regarding technological advances in animation, video editing and graphics.
• Has and applies considerable knowledge of what story ideas and concepts to use for assigned telecasts.
• Has four plus years of progressively complex related remote or related sports production experience
• Has good knowledge of sports and sports history.
• Strong organizational and interpersonal skills as well as the ability to supervise student employees and free-lance.
• Excellent written and oral communications skills, superior telephone etiquette and ability to deal effectively with students, faculty and staff, television networks, free-lance operators, as well as peers and management.
• Ability to operate control room equipment including but not not limited to video switchers, replay systems, graphics for television, audio for television.
• Familiarity with Wake Forest campus, athletics, and off site competition venues or ability to acquire such knowledge.
• Ability to acquire knowledge of any current and future systems as well as train others on those systems.
• Knowledge of superior customer service standards and practices.
• Ability to work after hours and/or weekends and on-call, as specified by supervisor.
• Ability to meet the requirements of the University’s automobile insurance.
• Knowledge of ACC/NCAA and ACC Network/ESPN regulations.
