An X-ray Technician plays an essential role in a radiology department, assisting radiologists in the imaging process rather than making diagnoses, which is the responsibility of physicians. The job involves taking pictures of the body using various imaging techniques, ensuring patient safety throughout the procedure, explaining the procedure in layman terms when needed, and consistently producing high-quality images that enable accurate diagnoses.

Primary Responsibilities

• Work between the X-ray and CT departments.
• Require at least two forms of identification (name, DOB) for each patient.
• Instruct patients on positioning to obtain accurate images.
• Maintain radiographic equipment in quality working order.
• Obtain images for areas requested by the physician or radiologist.
• Use radiation on the patient when necessary.
• Track patient records throughout the process.
• Assist radiologists and physicians in evaluating images.
• Prevent unnecessary exposure of sensitive areas to radiation.
• Communicate with patients, prepare them by removing garments or jewelry that may interfere with the procedure, and explain how the process works.
• Position patients correctly to obtain X-rays.
• Set equipment parameters to achieve optimal density, detail, and contrast of the imaged area.
• Apply anatomical and physiological knowledge to aid the physician in diagnosing problems.
• Follow physician instructions closely, prepare radiography equipment, position patients, and obtain optimal images for diagnosis.
• Communicate calmly, compassionately, and professionally with all patient types, including the elderly, ailing, and handicapped.
• Apply HIPAA to every patient interaction.
• Enter reports into the patient chart after the radiologist has read the images and dictated the report.
• Verify each patient’s order before scanning and consult the ordering physician if there are any questions.

Required Qualifications

• Certification as a radiologic technologist from an accredited institution.
• Completion of an accredited training program.
• Registered with the American Registry for Radiation Technologists (ARRT).
• State license in South Carolina.
• At least one year of experience, or new graduates based on clinical hours.

Benefits and Compensation

Pay ranges from $24 to $43 per hour based on full-time employment, local labor market, education, experience, and certifications. In addition to salary, benefits include a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase, and 401(k) contribution, all subject to eligibility requirements.
