QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be 15 years old or older
- Current authorization as an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor
- Current certifications in American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer and AED - or equivalent
- Demonstrate proficiency in teaching water safety skills and strokes
- Be in good health and be physically fit to perform all duties
- Possess leadership qualities and good public relation skills
LENGTH OF CONTRACT: Variable hours as determined by the Aquatics Coordinator
JOB SUMMARY: Instruct and supervise students while maintaining a safe environment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Responsible for effective instruction and the safety of students during lessons
- Assist lifeguards (as necessary) in an emergency
- Instruct students according to the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor's Manual: especially the Learn to Swim courses
- Know pool and building Emergency Action Plan
- Enforce all District and program policies, rules and regulations
- Ensure proper care, use, and storage of equipment used in and for lessons
- Report any unsafe conditions (including damage or malfunction of equipment) to the Pool Supervisor or the Aquatics Coordinator
- Maintain Swimming Courses Skills Checklists (attendance and skills completed) for each class during lessons
- Issue either a course completion certificate or "non-pass" card to each participant at the conclusion of the session
- Be sensitive to student's fears: such as the deep end and the diving board
- Participate in staff training sessions as directed by the Aquatics Coordinator
- Performs other related duties as assigned
