Description

The Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR), DoD’s premier research enterprise for infectious diseases, brain health and performance optimization, is offering a post-bachelor’s level research fellowship.

Responsibilities

As the selected applicant, you will join a community of scientists and researchers focused on determining the presence of antibodies in preclinical samples and/or from human clinical trials using a variety of biochemical and immunological methods. These methods include surface plasmon resonance, enzyme‑linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), flow cytometry, western blotting and Meso Scale Discovery (MSD).

Under the guidance of a mentor, you will learn and practice:

  • General laboratory techniques such as preparing buffers and reagents, tissue culture, purification of proteins, virus growth and purification, ELISA, cytokine/chemokine assays.
  • Techniques for preparing and characterizing adjuvant and vaccine formulations.
  • Data collection, analysis, graph and table preparation, and statistical analysis.
  • Documenting experiments and results clearly, detailed and accurately.
  • Developing scientific writing skills and presenting results at laboratory meetings.

Silver Spring, Maryland

Start Date

WRAIR is ready to appoint immediately; exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection in coordination with the candidate. Applications are reviewed continuously and filling continues until positions are filled.

Appointment Length

This is a twelve‑month research appointment, renewable for additional periods depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules and participant availability.

Compensation & Benefits

Participants will receive a stipend appropriate to academic standing, discipline, experience and research facility location. Other provisions may include:

  • Health insurance supplement – eligible participants may purchase health insurance through ORISE.
  • Training and travel allowance.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate will have earned a bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry, biomedical science, cellular and molecular biology, neurosciences or another eligible discipline within 60 months of application date.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with standard laboratory techniques, ELISA and/or tissue culture.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Experience in a laboratory environment.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Citizenship: U.S. Citizen only.
  • Degree: Bachelor’s degree received within the last 60 months.
