Job Description

Ensure safe, efficient, and economical operation, maintenance, and control of the city's water and wastewater systems, including water production, water wastewater treatment, storage, distribution and collection system facilities.

Examples Of Duties
  • Assist Lead Operator in performing and interpreting standardized water and wastewater tests.
  • Record daily data collection as required by TCEQ and assist the Lead Operator in maintaining those records.
  • Assist Lead Operator with maintaining and updating the City Water Monitoring Plan.
  • Assist Lead Operator with collecting regular bacteriological samples as required by the Monitoring Plan.
  • Flush dead-end mains as required, and records water used because of flushing.
  • Through field investigations, testing and system flushing ensures that a high level of water quality is maintained throughout the water system.
  • Assist Lead Operator when responding to customer complaints related to water quality.
  • Monitor water and wastewater quality during the treatment process through visual inspection and the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.
  • Inspect, operate, and maintain system equipment including computer controls, telemetry systems, microprocessors, flow control devices, power-driven machinery, and chemical feed equipment.
  • Monitor, inspect and maintain pump station and lift station equipment and respond to equipment alarms.
  • Inspect remote sites daily.
  • Troubleshoot and correct a variety of electrical and mechanical problems or potential problems involving pumping and measuring equipment and recalibrate equipment as required.
  • Perform preventive maintenance duties, including painting equipment, cleaning of chemical screens, filters, and custodial and grounds maintenance.
  • Operate equipment, such as engine-driven pumps, generators, compressors, hoists, forklifts, cranes, and other heavy equipment as necessary.
  • Assist with Maintenance crew, Utility Billing, Wastewater and/or Streets Division as needed.
  • Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.
Typical Qualifications

High school or GED, plus one (1) year of water or wastewater treatment experience is preferred. Basic: Spreadsheet, Word Processing/Typing Must possess a valid Class "C" Driver's license when hired. Ability to obtain a TCEQ D water and D wastewater treatment license within twelve months of hire. Must pass a pre-employment drug screen, criminal background check and MVR check. Regular use of complex machines and equipment (desktop/laptop computer and software, road and production machines and equipment, small, medium, and large trucks, mowers, backhoe, front end loader, dump truck, sewer jet, probe rod, pumps, power tools, hand tools, driver's license/cdl, etc.)

Most work performed is in an outdoor environment with frequent exposure to hazardous and unpleasant conditions. Work requires extensive stooping, lifting, standing, climbing, and other physical activities needed to repair the streets. Ability to work overtime and/or be on call for the department during extreme weather and/or the rotation of schedules on night/weekends and the ability to respond to a call within thirty (30) minutes. Exerting force to lift, carry, or drag 50-100 pounds occasionally, 25-50 pounds frequently, or up to 10-20 pounds constantly. Other essential and important duties/functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for adequate physical performance abilities including moderate and heavy lifting, bending stooping, kneeling, crawling, climbing and the use of fingers, both hands and both arms, the use of both legs, walking, standing, or sitting for prolonged periods of time. Ability to operate motorized equipment and assigned vehicles, adequate speech, hearing, and eyesight required, lift, carry, push, pull, drag, or hold moderate to heavy weight objects, visual acuity and ability to distinguish color.
