Job Summary
The wastewater treatment facility operator I, II, and III will work mainly outdoors under general supervision performing tasks of average and above-average difficulty as needed to help monitor treat and make adjustments for the city's wastewater flows and to help install maintain and/or repair wastewater treatment plant systems and equipment belonging to the City of Spearfish.
Preference will be given to candidates with state of SD wastewater treatment certification.
WWT Operator I - grade 12; position range $25.65-$39.03; hiring range $25.65-$31.25 DOQ
WWT Operator II - grade 13; position range $26.95-$41.01; hiring range $26.95-$32.84 DOQ
WWT Operator III - grade 15; position range $29.75-$45.27; hiring range $29.75-$36.25 DOQ
Essential Functions
The wastewater treatment facility operator I; II; and III:
1.Will be required to have a physical presence and regular and reliable attendance with the ability to respond at all hours when necessary.
2.Monitors the flow meters; lights; and hour meters of assigned control panels; and; according to demand; adjusts pump rates to maintain appropriate levels of plant operation and wastewater treatment.
3.Monitors and controls wastewater sources and flows; operating pumps; motors; valves; and related equipment; and adjust chemical dosages according to established safety guidelines and regulations.
4.Gathers water; wastewater; and sludge samples; and prepares them for laboratory testing; according to established policy and procedure. He or she will immediately report any unusual or suspicious readings to the supervisor.
5.Maintains careful; accurate; and timely records of all readings; tests; adjustments; and activity regarding the handling of wastewater. Enters information into computerized database system.
6.Installs; maintains; cleans; and repairs meters; pumps; screens; filters; pipelines; and the like as directed.
7.Assists in cleaning and maintaining the main lift station and treatment plant equipment on a routine; as well as emergency basis.
8.Performs maintenance and repair tasks on buildings and grounds.
9.Competently and safely operates; services; and maintains light construction equipment; vehicles; and tools. These may include; but not limited to:

- plumbing gear hand toolspavement saws
- jackhammers soldering equipmentskid steer
- sludge injection vehiclessnow and ice removal equipment
10.Utilizes chemistry; bacteriology; and physics involved in wastewater and its flow; and the basic mechanical and electrical functions of related meters; pumps; valves; radio controls; and SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisitions) computer-regulated systems.
11.Performs process control testing to optimize the activated sludge system.
12.Performs lab procedures and quality assurance practices in the compliance and process control laboratories.
13.Utilizes self-contained breathing apparatus while performing chlorine handling procedures.
14.Knows and practices safe work habits. This includes appropriately observing safety standards; such as:
• Wearing hard hats; safety-toed shoes; protective eyewear; air filter masks; rubber gloves; ear protection; and other such gear in assigned work areas.
• Working only in properly secured trenches and work areas.
• Handling hazardous materials according to state and federal regulations and standards.
• Practicing established routines to maintain excellent hygiene at all work stations.
• Obtaining hepatitis vaccinations in timely manner. (Note: This standard is not strictly required; however; it is highly and strongly recommended. The City of Spearfish pays for this vaccination.)
15.Works in all weather conditions; may be exposed to diseases hazardous to human health; such as typhoid; tetanus and hepatitis; may work with hazardous equipment and chemicals such as chlorine and solvents which require safety clothing and protective equipment.
16.Maintains the security of the facility area in order to prevent theft; vandalism; contamination; or terrorism.
17.Knowledgeable of the geographical layout of the city; and able to work easily with the public.
18.Routinely consults with personnel throughout the department; city; county; and state to remain aware of issues and challenges. May include attending and participating in professional conferences throughout the region.

Minimum Qualifications
• Associate's degree in environmental science; biology; engineering technician; industrial technology or directly related field from an accredited college or university preferred and/or a relevant combination of education/experience as may be deemed acceptable to the hiring authority.
• Possession of a valid Class 1A CDL South Dakota driver's license with a tanker; air brake; and pintle hitch endorsements or ability to obtain within 90 days from date of hire. Maintain an insurable driving history.
Operator I - Possession or ability to obtain South Dakota Class I Wastewater Treatment Operator's certification within eighteen (18) months of hire date.
Operator II - Possession of South Dakota Class II Wastewater Treatment Operator's certification.
Operator III - Possession of South Dakota Class III Wastewater Treatment Operator's certification.
Additional Requirements and Duties:
Operator I - Performs minor changes to treatment processes and equipment for proper running performance such as switching valves; pumps; adjusting times and feed rates for proper running performance; assist in repairing equipment and vehicles related to wastewater facility.
Operator II - Performs routine changes to treatment processes and equipment for proper running performance; assists in installing; setting up; and repairing equipment and vehicles related to wastewater facility.
Operator III - Recommends and performs changes to treatment processes and equipment; installs and sets up new equipment for proper running performance; performs training of wastewater facility operators I and II.
