Engagement: Independent contractor for mentoring and consulting

Compensation: $50 to $75 per hour

Commitment: Approximately 6 to 10 hours per month with a flexible schedule

Position Overview

Voice Up seeks an experienced professional to serve as Sports Psychology Mentor and Training Development Consultant. This individual will design and lead student training that supports Voice Up's emerging athlete mental health practice area. The consultant will act as a curriculum architect, mentor, and strategic adviser, preparing graduate students and emerging practitioners to support athletes across sports. Experience in basketball, including collegiate, elite, or professional environments, is especially valued.

The position is intentionally nonclinical during its early phase. It does not include psychotherapy, diagnosis, treatment planning, or direct clinical services. The consultant will help participants understand the boundaries among mentoring, coaching, performance consulting, and licensed clinical care. The work advances Voice Up's mission to connect people to purpose and reflects five operating principles: collaboration, humility, precision, patience, and empathy.

The consultant will work directly with Voice Up's founder and executive leadership, contributing practical expertise while helping establish a credible, accessible training model that can serve diverse learners and future athlete populations across communities.

What You Will Do

- Design a structured sports psychology curriculum for practicum students, interns, and emerging professionals.

- Create learning modules, case studies, reflection exercises, and feedback tools aligned with recognized sport psychology competencies and ethical standards.

- Lead individual and small-group mentoring that strengthens professional identity, reflective practice, cultural responsiveness, and sound judgment.

- Help learners map realistic pathways from graduate education to athlete-centered consulting or clinical careers.

- Develop frameworks that integrate mental performance, mindfulness, peer support, art therapy, and visual expression, particularly for athletes navigating injury recovery.

- Teach the psychological dimensions of athletic identity, return-to-play decisions, performance pressure, career transition, and recovery.

- Collaborate with sports medicine, rehabilitation, behavioral health, education, and creative-arts partners to strengthen training content.

- Advise Voice Up leadership on quality improvement, professional risk, appropriate safeguards, and a staged roadmap toward professional-sports partnerships.

- Help cultivate future practicum, field experience, and mentorship opportunities across collegiate and professional sports networks.

Required Qualifications

- Master's degree, or active graduate study, in sport psychology, kinesiology with a sport psychology concentration, clinical or counseling psychology, or a closely related discipline.

- Foundational preparation in performance psychology, mental skills training, athlete-centered consultation, and ethical practice.

- Working knowledge of relevant professional standards, including the Association for Applied Sport Psychology Code of Ethics.

- Understanding of injury recovery, athletic identity development and transition, and return-to-play processes.

- Excellent written, verbal, teaching, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to translate psychological concepts for students, athletes, and multidisciplinary partners.

- Strong organization, independent judgment, reliability, and problem-solving ability in a flexible remote environment.

- Active professional liability insurance or eligibility to obtain appropriate coverage before beginning applicable services.

Preferred Experience

Strong candidates may bring certification or candidacy as a Certified Mental Performance Consultant through AASP, or a comparable credential. Voice Up also values direct work with collegiate, elite, or professional athletes; experience in basketball; group facilitation; teaching or coaching; internship and workforce-program design; trauma-informed engagement; and familiarity with visual art, art therapy, or other creative methods. Experience with grant-supported initiatives, cross-sector partnerships, or responsible human-centered artificial intelligence applications is welcome.

The Professional We Are Seeking

The successful consultant will combine subject-matter credibility with a mentor's patience and a builder's mindset. This professional should be comfortable shaping an early-stage program, listening carefully to learners, setting clear boundaries, and turning complex knowledge into practical training. The position is especially well suited to someone who believes athlete well-being, ethical performance support, creative expression, and purposeful career development can reinforce one another.

Growth Opportunity

As the program matures and partnerships expand, this consulting role may grow into a larger leadership opportunity. Future responsibilities could include directing a dedicated student training institute and helping establish an athlete group-counseling practice led by appropriately qualified graduates. Any expansion would depend on program development, partnership readiness, funding, licensure, and organizational needs.

A VOICE UP PUBLISHING FEATURE PART ONE OF THREE
The Tape
Twenty-three years before he built a platform to help strangers name their purpose, Art Fuller's grandmother had already shown him how.
PART ONE OF THE FULLER ROAD SERIES

At some point in the nineteen-nineties, on an occasion no one now living can date with certainty, Art Fuller sat across from his grandmother with a video camera running between them and let her talk. She talked, as she generally did, without hurry, in the manner of a woman who had lived long enough to understand that most of what matters cannot be rushed toward. Her name was Mary Douglass. She had been born in Lowndes County, Alabama, a place that during the years of her young adulthood earned, and never quite shed, the nickname Bloody Lowndes a county where, as late as 1965, roughly eighty per cent of the population was Black and not one of them was permitted to vote.

Fuller put the cassette away. This is the part of the story he tells now with a kind of rueful wonder, because what he did with that recording, for the next twenty-three years, was nothing. He did not lose it. He did not forget it existed. He simply let it sit, the way a person lets sit any object whose value they have not yet found the occasion to need.
The occasion arrived at Thanksgiving in 2025. By then Fuller was thirty years into a career that had carried him from a math classroom in Connecticut to the executive suite of a behavioral-health organization in Indiana, and about a year into a company he had founded called Voice Up, whose entire premise was that people are walking around with valuable experience they have never been taught to name. He played the recording again a digital video cassette that had sat, untouched, for more than twenty years. What he saw and heard undid him a little. His grandmother was describing, in her own unhurried words and without ever using the word for it, precisely the thing he believed he had just invented.
