Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Medicine Simulation Fellowship

Overview

The Cornell University Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Medicine Simulation Fellowship is a two-year program designed to provide fellows opportunities to cultivate the skills necessary to become leaders in veterinary simulation education through active participation in the development and delivery of veterinary medical simulation training and a mentored research project focused on simulation education. Medical simulation is a growing approach in veterinary education, with simulation centers opening in many veterinary colleges and training centers around the world. This fellowship is designed for a veterinary criticalist with a strong interest in cutting edge educational approaches and a desire to be a leader in veterinary education.

The Fellow will serve as a key member of the Emergency and Critical Care faculty and will help deliver courses for ongoing faculty development, ECC resident, veterinary student and veterinary technician simulation training, as well as internal and external continuing education. This experience will provide the foundation necessary to:

• identify the learning needs of diverse audiences
• create robust simulation cases and courses based on specific learning objectives
• develop and refine debriefing skills for all levels of learners
• design and implement education research projects

Position Description

Qualifications:

Board certified diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care and those who will be board-eligible by July of 2027 are encouraged to apply.

Effort Distribution

• Education and Research : 65% of the Fellow’s effort will focus on teaching, developing new educational content, and working on research projects in the Tetlow and Roy Park Veterinary Innovation Lab, a state-of-the-art immersive simulation center in the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine.
• Clinical : 35% of the Fellow’s effort (approximately 7 days per month on average) will be dedicated to clinical coverage as an attending criticalist in the Companion Animal Hospital of the Cornell University Hospital for Animals.

Support and Resources

• Primary mentorship provided by the Director of the Tetlow and Roy Park Veterinary Innovation Lab (the Park Sim Lab), Daniel J. Fletcher, PhD, DVM, DACVECC. Dan is the creator of the Open VetSim simulation platform and Past-President of ACVECC.
• The primary home of the Fellow will be the Park Sim Lab, a state-of-the-art veterinary simulation center with 2 simulation suites and video/audio monitoring. Open VetSim-based simulators, plus feline and equine simulators in development, are available.
• Additional simulation equipment includes 3 mechanical ventilation simulators (Ingmar Medical ASL-5000), an iSimulate Realiti360 system, and 6 Deepscope VR veterinary ultrasound simulators.
• The Fellow will work with the College’s curriculum team and Educational Support Services group to expand the use of simulation technology for teaching and assessment.
• Through a collaboration with the Weill Cornell Emergency Medicine Simulation Fellowship, the Fellow will participate in rounds, journal clubs, and other collaborative learning opportunities with Fellows and Faculty from Cornell’s medical school.

Salary and Benefits

• $85,000 per year salary for 2 years
