Veterinarian, Staff Manager

Overview

Location and Schedule

• Typical 8‑hour schedule with paid break, with flexibility for occasional overtime.
• Primarily on‑site at the Carson Community Veterinary Clinic; occasional work may be required at other ASPCA locations in the Greater LA Area.

Compensation

Starting pay will depend on education, experience, location, and other factors. The target hiring range for new hires is $169,500 – $179,500 annually.

Responsibilities

People Leadership

• Oversee medicine and surgery at the CVC according to standard operating procedures.
• Train veterinarians in high‑volume spay/neuter and other medical protocols.
• Maintain a visible presence on the floor, answer questions, offer support, and foster a positive work culture.
• Conduct regular 1:1s, recognition, coaching, performance evaluations, and feedback.
• Partner with People Team to hire staff and per diem veterinarians and onboard new team members.
• Ensure all team members are trained in low‑stress handling and support animal behavioral and mental health.
• Communicate effectively with clients, including difficult end‑of‑life conversations.
• Develop and execute corrective action plans as needed.
• Guide direct reports toward annual goals and conduct performance reviews.
• Prioritize clinic safety, report incidents, and complete supervisor reports promptly.

Medical

• Work as a primary pet care veterinarian or spay/neuter surgeon on scheduled shifts and fill‑in coverage.
• Perform pre‑surgery exams and ~30–40 spay/neuter procedures per clinic day.
• Provide preventive and basic care: physical exams, diagnostics, treatment, prescription, and discharge information.
• Treat post‑surgical complications on an outpatient basis.
• Triage and refer cases outside Community Medicine parameters.
• Support internal ASPCA programs with medical consultations as needed.
• Maintain a safe, low‑stress environment for animals, staff, and clients.

Administrative

• Schedule veterinarians for optimal coverage.
• Meet regularly with the Medical Director to provide open communication.
• Participate in monthly CM Veterinary Medicine Rounds and Morbidity and Mortality Meetings.
• Support research and development studies as needed.
• Attend workshops or meetings as required.

Qualifications

• Valid California State Veterinary License (or ability to obtain before start date).
• Demonstrated leadership in high‑volume, fast‑paced environments.
• Adaptability and enthusiasm for teaching effective protocols; training will be provided.
• Strong teamwork and communication skills.
• Desire to improve welfare of pets and serve underserved owners.
• Post‑training capacity to perform ~30–40 high‑volume spay/neuter procedures per day.
• Fear Free Shelter certification within 60 days of hire.
• Ability to exemplify ASPCA core values and behavioral competencies.

Language

• English (Required).

Education and Work Experience

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from an AVMA accredited college (required).
• 3 years of small animal medicine and surgery experience.
• 1 year of surgical experience; high‑volume spay/neuter preferred.
• People management experience strongly preferred.
