Pay Range

$150 - $170 per hour. General range; final rate depends on experience, skills, and location.

Job Purpose and Function

The primary purpose of the Locum Veterinarian is to provide preventative care, diagnose and treat diseases and injuries of pets.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safety of pets, clients, and associates by using safe restraining techniques, following protocols, and maintaining clean, sterile, organized treatment areas, exam rooms, and labs.
  • Obtain relevant information and history from clients, and maintain proper and complete medical records.
  • Educate clients about preventative care, pet health needs, diagnoses or treatments, hospital services, and related information.
  • Provide professional, efficient, and exceptional service, including prescribing and administering preventative care, diagnosing, and treating diseases and injuries of pets.
  • Effectively communicate diagnosis and treatment plans to the veterinary medical team and clients.
  • Ensure local, state, and federal laws are followed, including proper maintenance of the controlled substance inventory log.
  • Understand and follow state guidelines regarding the duties of veterinary assistants and licensed veterinary technicians.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned.

Special Working Conditions

• Ability to be confident around pets (dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, etc.).

• Client needs and work volume often require more than 40 hours per week.

• This position requires special hours, including working weekends and evenings.

• Requires advanced reading, writing, and speaking English to perform duties proficiently.

• The noise level in the work environment is moderately high.

• Requires ambulatory skills, ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, and manipulate up to 50 pounds.

• Requires good hand‑eye coordination, finger‑hand‑arm dexterity, and visual acuity to use a keyboard and operate equipment.

• Exposure to pets that may bite or scratch, anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and medication/controlled substances.

• Minimal travel required, possibly for vendor visits and associate education.

  • Mathematical ability – Add, subtract, multiply, divide, compute rates, ratios, and percentages; convert units of measurement.
  • Computer skills – Use Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, and other specialized software confidently.
  • Management ability – Enforce policies, sustain high productivity while maintaining morale, encourage teamwork, and apply a coaching philosophy for performance management.

Qualifications: Education and Training

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent degree.
  • License in good standing with the applicable state veterinary board.
  • License with the Drug Enforcement Agency.
  • Proven ability to perform all basic surgeries with standard instruments and equipment.
