Pay Range

$130 - $150 per hour.

Job Summary

The primary purpose and function of the Locum Veterinarian is to provide preventative care, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and injuries of Pets.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safety of pets, clients and associates by using safe restraining techniques, following standard protocols and maintaining clean, sterile, organized treatment areas, exam rooms and labs.
  • Obtain relevant information and history from clients, and maintain proper and complete medical records.
  • Educate clients about preventative care, pet health needs, diagnoses/treatments, hospital services, and other related information.
  • Provide professional, efficient and exceptional service including prescribing and administering preventative care for the wellness needs of pets and diagnosing and treating diseases and injuries of pets.
  • Effectively communicate diagnosis and treatment plans to the veterinary medical team and clients.
  • Ensure local, state and federal laws are followed, including proper maintenance of the controlled substance inventory log.
  • Understand and follow state guidelines regarding duties of veterinary assistants and licensed veterinary technicians.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned.

  • Mathematical: Add, subtract, multiply, divide, compute rate, ratio, percent, convert units.
  • Computer: Use Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Outlook and specialized software confidently.
  • Management: Enforce policies, maintain high morale and promote common goals with a coaching philosophy.

Special Working Conditions

Ability to be confident around pets (dogs, cats, birds, reptiles). May require more than 40 hours per week, including weekends and evenings. Must have skills in reasoning, remembering, mathematics, and language (reading, writing, speaking English). Challenges include moderate noise, variable work demands, and ambulatory needs such as standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Requires good hand‑eye coordination, finger‑hand‑arm dexterity, and visual acuity for keyboard and equipment use. Exposure to bites or scratches, anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and medication/controlled substances. Minimal travel for vendor visits or associate education.

Experience, Education and Training

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent degree required.
  • License in good standing with the applicable state veterinary board.
  • DEA license required.
  • Proven ability to perform all basic surgeries, using standard medical instruments and equipment.
