Area Chief of Staff

Pay: $135,405 - $195,585 annually (full‑time). Eligible for variable pay based on production in all states except Puerto Rico. Salary determined based on experience, skill, abilities, education, location, and schedule.

Role Summary: The Area Chief of Staff leads, develops, and manages associate veterinarians in their hospitals to ensure Banfield attracts, develops, engages, and retains doctors delivering high quality care and meeting performance measures. Drives culture and delivery of quality care by the veterinary provider team (DVM, CVT, VA) in assigned hospitals, ensuring consistent care aligning with six domains of quality (safe, effective, patient/client centered, timely, efficient, equitable).

Responsibilities

  • Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc. within self and team.
  • Act as Responsible Veterinarian for Veterinary and Pharmacy Board Permits.
  • Manage controlled substance inventory for relief doctors.
  • Own doctor engagement and retention; assess risk, implement retention strategy, create culture of community and engagement.
  • Provide medical leadership to hospital teams, driving inclusive and collaborative work environment in partnership with practice managers.
  • Validate clinical skillset and alignment with quality standards through medical record reviews, quality assignments, audits, and patient safety event reviews.
  • Provide veterinary services; spend time in clinical role per hospital needs and partnership with DVQ.
  • Oversee coaching program for new veterinarians; ensure engagement and skill development.
  • Recruit veterinary talent in partnership with Director of Veterinary Quality and Talent Acquisition.
  • Serve as brand ambassador in local veterinary community.
  • Deliver excellent hospital experience to students, externs, and candidates.
  • Ensure doctors achieve productivity goals through high‑quality medicine, preventive care, client experience, and team partnership.
  • Deliver veterinary operations KPIs and partner with practice manager to develop and revise plans to achieve KPI targets.
  • Accountable to hospital OGSM performance as quality medicine delivers operational outcomes.
  • Develop veterinary leadership talent bench and succession plan.
  • Ensure compliance with Banfield clinical essentials, government regulations, and industry standards via quality assessments, audits, etc.
  • Meet all local, state, and federal regulatory requirements, including controlled substance management and radiation safety.
  • Create and execute plans to resolve identified gaps.
  • Champion preventive care culture and drive optimum wellness plan growth.
  • Create a “say yes” culture driving client service and experience scorecard goals.
  • Resolve client complaints related to medical standard of care.
  • Manage medical equipment inventory and new equipment requests.
  • Deliver highest level of veterinary care to every pet.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent foreign degree.
  • Veterinary license in good standing or eligibility.
  • 3+ years of small animal medicine and surgery practice.
  • Proficiency in basic surgeries and medical instruments.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills and practical solutions.
  • Intellectual ability to follow instructions.
  • Mathematical ability for rate, ratio, percent, unit conversions.
  • Comfortable with computer and specialized software.
  • Leadership abilities: initiative, integrity, cooperativeness, flexibility, independence, resilience.
  • Ability to work long periods at computer; may require >40 hours per week.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs., stand, walk, kneel, climb, use hand‑eye coordination.
  • Requires state‑controlled substance and federal DEA license within 3 months; USDA accreditation within 3 months.
