We are currently searching for experienced candidates for the following position:Vertical Turning Operator (2nd Shift) in our Cleveland, Ohio facilityPosition SummaryThe Vertical Turning Machinist Operator is a skilled machinist who operates vertical turning machines, also known as vertical lathes, both manual and CNC, to produce precision large-diameter parts.
They set up and run machines that rotate the workpiece vertically to perform cutting, boring, facing, and threading operations according to technical specifications.Key ResponsibilitiesRead and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, setup sheets, and work orders to determine machining requirements and sequencesPerform full Vertical turning machine setups including tooling selection, fixture installation, work holding, and workpiece alignment for large-scale componentsOperate machines to shape metal or other materials by turning, boring, facing, and threadingUse precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and gauges to inspect finished partsSet up, load, and execute CNC programs; make at-machine edits or adjustments as required to meet dimensional and surface finish requirementsAdjust machining parameters such as speeds, feeds, depth of cut, and tool offsets to maintain accuracy, efficiency, and tool lifeMonitor machining operations to ensure conformance to specifications, making real-time corrections as neededInspect machined components using precision measuring instruments including micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, dial indicators, and height gaugesPerform in-process quality checks and verify critical dimensions to ensure compliance with engineering tolerancesMaintain machine cleanliness and perform routine preventive maintenance and daily operator careDocument production data, inspection results, and any nonconformances; promptly communicate machine or quality issues to supervisionCollaborate with quality, engineering, and production teams to ensure proper interpretation of requirements and continuous process improvementTrain and mentor junior operators as neededAdherent to all safety procedures, including proper rigging and handling of large and heavy componentsEducation & ExperienceEducation: High school diploma or equivalentExperience: 2–5 years of experience operating Vertical Machining lathes or related machine shop equipmentThis position requires strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently on large-scale, high-value components in a heavy industrial manufacturing environment.
