- Performs prescribed overnight diagnostic sleep monitoring studies, which may include home sleep tests, to patients, with intermittent supervision from a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist as required by CMS guidelines.
- Analyzes the results to aide clinicians with diagnosis, treatment, monitoring and care of patients.
- Acts as a resource to the department.
- Obtains artifact free sleep tracings that accurately reflect physiologic processes occurring during sleep of patients utilizing the latest technology.
- Analyzes all types of sleep records of patients.
- Identifies and documents sleep stages and quantify physiologic processes during the data acquisition.
- Ensures an accurate and readable recording using deductive reasoning to troubleshoot minor problems and make adjustments as needed during the testing process.
- Collects and/or reviews pertinent medical, historical, and medication information in order to perform the appropriate study prescribed by the physician.
- Assists with the development of department policies, procedures and processes, facilitate testing and maintain quality to achieve optimal patient results.
- Ensures quality assurance standards as outlined by departmental policies and procedures in accordance with regulatory agencies.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED plus knowledge typically obtained through three years of direct patient care experience OR must be enrolled in or have completed training in polysomnography in a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or a Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) program with the polysomnography option.
- BLS Certification is required.
- Requires Registry by the Board of Polysomnographic Technologists within two years of hire or transfer.
- Must demonstrate critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities and effective communication skills.
