Job Description
This role is within CNA's Construction Monoline Excess Casualty team. You will manage a highly complex book of Excess Casualty business, providing underwriting expertise for construction risks.
Locations: Denver, CO; Los Angeles, CA; Irvine, CA; San Diego, CA. Hybrid office/remote schedule. Travel up to 15%.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Underwrite highly complex risks using diagnostic and systematic analysis to assess acceptability.
- Develop specialized endorsement language for complex risks.
- Determine appropriate pricing based on financial and competitive analysis, ensuring compliance and minimal oversight.
- Make recommendations on underwriting policy and pricing strategy.
- Analyze quality, quantity, and profitability of underwritten risks; prepare and present reports to management.
- Market products and services through agencies or brokerage community and conduct field visits.
- Develop and maintain agency/broker relationships with large producers to achieve profitable outcomes.
- Stay current on state/territory regulations, industry trends, and participate in trade groups as needed.
- Mentor and guide less experienced underwriters; assist in underwriting training development.
- Utilize advanced functionality in CNA systems for day‑to‑day activities; lead special projects and presentations.
Reporting Relationship
Reports to the AVP, Underwriting.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
- Advanced technical underwriting expertise and deep knowledge of insurance principles.
- Strong communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.
- Advanced analytical and problem‑solving skills with ability to manage multiple projects.
- Ability to handle ambiguous situations and issues.
- Creativity in resolving complex business problems.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and relevant business software.
- Demonstrated leadership experience.
Education & Experience
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience; professional designations preferred. Typically 5‑8 years of underwriting experience.
Compensation & Benefits
Salary range in California, Colorado, Connecticut, New York, and Washington: $87,000 to $178,000 annually. Compensation is based on experience, skills, certifications, and location. CNA offers a comprehensive benefits package for employees and family members.
