Underwriting and Commercial Clearance Counsel

Job Summary:

The Underwriting and Commercial Clearance Counsel is responsible for handling confidential and time‑sensitive commercial transaction matters. This role ensures that pre‑closing, closing, and post‑closing activities are completed accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. The position requires significant underwriting expertise, legal analysis, and the ability to manage multi‑state commercial real estate transactions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide title insurance underwriting support for national commercial real estate transactions handled by the NCS offices in Hoboken, NJ, and New York City.
  • Review legal documents, including deeds, mortgages, court orders, regulations, and other instruments for legal sufficiency.
  • Issue written approvals for transactions exceeding single risk liability limits.
  • Offer guidance on general underwriting matters and assist in transaction closings as needed.
  • Support claims resolution, continuing education initiatives, and compliance with state regulations related to title insurance.
  • Maintain electronic records of underwriting proofs, approvals, and decision justifications.
  • Maintain confidentiality in handling sensitive transaction matters.
  • Work a standard schedule (8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday through Friday) with flexibility for after‑hours events and additional work as necessary.
  • Serve as a professional and positive representative of the company.
  • Demonstrate the ability to both accept and provide supervision.
  • Develop and maintain professional, collaborative relationships with colleagues, management, and external stakeholders.
  • Communicate effectively through email, phone, Microsoft Teams, and in‑person interactions.
  • Engage in continuous learning and professional development, including company‑assigned continuing education programs.
  • Apply legal logic and analysis to a variety of complex underwriting and title insurance matters.
  • Understand and apply principles of title insurance, including products, policies, and endorsements.

Required Qualifications & Experience:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree; active and current member of a State Bar.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in an underwriting role.
  • Expertise in multi‑state, multi‑property commercial title transactions.
  • Strong knowledge of commercial insurance coverage and real estate terminology.
  • Exposure to residential title matters is a plus.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and RamQuest, with a willingness to learn new software systems.

  • Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed to meet operational and organizational objectives.
