Tyler Union- Assistant Project Engineering ManagerTyler Union, a division of McWane, Inc., has proudly served the waterworks industry for over a century, specializing in the manufacturing and distribution of ductile iron fittings, joint restraints, and valve boxes.The Assistant Project Engineering Manager plays a critical role in leading engineering and capital projects within the foundry and machining operations. This role combines hands-on technical project management with strategic leadership, mentorship, and oversight of Project Engineering staff, including junior engineers and interns. The Assistant Project Engineering Manager ensures projects are completed safely, on time, and within budget while driving continuous process improvement and aligning engineering initiatives with business goals.

Proactively promotes The McWane Way principles, values, and behaviors and lives the Compass Culture.The position offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health, life, dental, and vision insurance, disability coverage, vacation, holiday pay, and a 401(k) plan.All candidates offered employment must submit to a drug screen, physical, and background check.Key ResponsibilitiesProject Management & Execution: Lead and support multiple engineering projects from concept through commissioning, including planning, budgeting, scheduling, risk assessment, and resource allocationEnsure projects are executed to meet safety, quality, cost, and timeline objectivesEvaluate, select, and integrate new technologies, automation systems, and process improvementsTrack ROI of capital investments and operational efficiency of projectsTeam Leadership & Development: Directly manage and mentor engineers, junior engineers, and interns, fostering professional growth and skill developmentAssign tasks, monitor workloads, and provide regular performance feedbackSupport hiring, training, and onboarding of engineering personnelPromote cross-training and knowledge sharing among engineers to strengthen team capabilitiesCross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with production, maintenance, quality, and operations teams to ensure project goals are metPartner with leadership to advocate for resources, capital funding, and strategic project prioritizationFacilitate communication between engineering, management, and internal/external stakeholdersLead project meetings, providing technical guidance, updates, and issue resolutionTechnical Oversight: Conduct design reviews, validate technical accuracy, and ensure compliance with standards and regulationsReview and approve engineering deliverables, drawings, and specificationsImplement and maintain project documentation including scope, schedules, budgets, risk assessments, and lessons learnedQuality & Safety Compliance: Ensure projects and operations adhere to environmental, health, safety, and quality standardsCollaborate with quality teams to drive continuous improvement and defect reduction initiativesSupport ISO and regulatory audits as requiredStrategic Contribution: Assist in capital planning and justification for engineering projectsAnalyze project performance, operational costs, and schedule adherence, recommending corrective actions when neededChampion process improvement initiatives and standardization efforts across engineering functionsManage, mentor, and develop a team of engineers and junior engineersAssign work, set expectations, and provide coaching to ensure team successParticipate in performance evaluations, disciplinary actions, and recognition programsEnsure effective knowledge transfer and technical competency development across the teamQualificationsEducation & ExperienceBachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Industrial, Materials, or Metallurgical preferred); Master's preferredMinimum 7+ years of engineering experience, with at least 2–3 years in a supervisory or mentoring roleFoundry, metals, machining, or heavy manufacturing experience strongly preferredProven experience managing multiple projects, budgets, and engineering teamsKnowledge, Skills & AbilitiesStrong technical foundation in engineering principles, manufacturing processes, and project management methodologiesDemonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and develop engineering personnelExperience with CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks) and project management toolsKnowledge of CAPEX and OPEX management, risk assessment, and ROI trackingExcellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skillsPMP certification or equivalent project management training desirablePhysical & Cognitive AbilitiesFrequent standing, walking, bending, and liftingPrimarily on-site in a foundry environment with exposure to heat, noise, and industrial equipmentAbility to work in both office and plant-floor settingsOccasional travel to supplier sites, sister facilities, or industry eventsPlease note this job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties, or responsibilities that are required of the employee for this job.
