American Traveler seeks a Surgical First/Second Assistant with strong orthopedic experience and broad surgical specialty background for a Level III Trauma Center OR position.

- First Assist skills checklist required (not general ORT skills checklist)
- Minimum 12 months of core work experience in specialty area, with recent experience within the last year
- Strong hands-on experience in orthopedic procedures required, along with proficiency in neuro, general, ENT, and vascular specialties
- Robotics (Xi) experience preferred for candidates staying longer than one contract
- Epic EMR experience required
- Minimum 1 professional reference dated within the last year from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN
- Candidate DOB and last 4 digits of SSN required for consideration
Responsibilities
- Main OR setting at a Level III Trauma Center with Level III NICU and Magnet designation
- 21 OR beds within the surgery department
- Primarily orthopedic caseload but requires strong background across neuro, general, ENT, vascular, and robotics (Xi) specialties
- Patient types include Neuro/ENT, Orthopedic, General, Breast/Plastics, Vascular, Laparoscopic, Oncology, GU, and GYN cases
- 1:1 patient ratio
- Evening shift, 11:00 AM-7:30 PM, 40 hours per week
- Cross-trained across all Main OR specialties and the urology center, with no floating to other hospitals
- On-call responsibilities including rotating overnight and weekend call slots, with a 30-minute response time
- Uses Epic EMR, Alaris, and Pyxis systems
- Function as Surgical First or Second Assistant to the surgeon for complex and basic operative or invasive procedures
- May perform Surgical Technologist responsibilities when needed, though not simultaneously with first assist duties
- Supported on the unit by Charge Nurses, Leads, and Supervisors
- Orientation spans 2 weeks, including education/paperwork, and specialty-specific training in general, ortho, neuro, and urology
- Variable start times for day shift, ranging between 5:30 AM and 7:00 AM
- Weekend call rotation required, occurring 1-2 times within an 8-week schedule
- Holiday weeks offer either four 10-hour shifts or the option to work normal hours and request unpaid time off for the holiday
- Hospital-provided surgical scrubs with scrub caps allowed if covered by a surgical bouffant
- First-time travelers are not recommended for this position and would require further evaluation and approval from the hiring supervisor
- Former employees of the health system or its subsidiaries must be separated for at least 12 months before becoming eligible for a travel assignment
- No radius rules apply, and local candidates are accepted at the same rate
