American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Tele position requiring NIHSS certification and prior stroke unit experience.
Requirements
- Active RN license (NC or Compact) required
- Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required
- Minimum 18 months of Med/Surg Tele experience required
- Proficiency in stroke assessments, chest tube management, PIV starts, trach care, cardiac rhythm interpretation, NGT placement, and drain/tube management (Dobhoff, PEG, Hemovac, JP drains, flexiseals, foley insertion/management)
- Experience managing PCA pumps and medication drips including cardiac drips, heparin, blood products, and IV fluids
- Epic EMR experience required
- Last 4 digits of SSN and full DOB required for consideration
- Minimum 1 professional reference dated within the last year from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN
Responsibilities
- Medical Telemetry unit within a 109-bed hospital that is an Advanced Primary Stroke Center
- 27-bed unit with an average census of 20 patients
- Common diagnoses include stroke, COPD, chest pain, altered mental status, and GI bleed
- RN to patient ratio of 1:5-6, acuity dependent, with potential surge staffing up to 1:7-8
- 12-hour night shift schedule, , 36 hours per week
- Every other weekend rotation required
- No on-call requirements
- Floating required within Region 1 facilities (Cabarrus, University City, Stanly, Lake Norman, Central Division including CMC Main, Mercy, and LCH peds) as needed within scope of practice
- 24/7 support available from phlebotomy, respiratory therapy, hospitalists, and telemetry monitoring techs
- CNA support available for foley insertion, IV removal, vitals, and ADLs
- Dayshift receptionist/HUC support only
- Charge nurse may or may not carry a patient assignment
- Uses Epic EMR, Alaris IV pumps, Omnicell medication dispensing, and Philips monitors
- Provide direct nursing care to Med/Surg Tele patients including medication and drip management, wound and drain care, and cardiac monitoring
- Positive, team-driven unit culture
- 2-day departmental orientation in addition to NEO
- Navy blue scrubs required

- Travelers must work approximately 75% of holidays
- Up to 6 RTO days may be approved, excluding holidays, with any missed contracted hours added to the end of the assignment
- Must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible; local candidates not accepted
- First-time travelers not preferred but will be considered for resource team positions
- Previous employees must have been separated from any Advocate Health Southeast facility for at least one year following a permanent position
