Unit Information
- Units: Med Surg units have 20-36 beds
- Experience Required: Minimum 2 years Med/Telemetry RN
- First‑time traveler accepted: Yes
Patient Types / Common Diagnoses
- Inpatient Med Surg and Telemetry units
- Acute or chronic disease
- Common comorbidities: diabetes, hypertension, infections, electrolyte imbalances, etc.
- Cardiac: post‑catheter, CHF, a‑fib
- Post‑surgical: general, orthopaedic, trauma
Patient Ratios
- RN: 1:4-6
- LPN: 1:4-6
- CNA: up to 1:14
Required Licenses & Certifications
- BLS required
- ACLS preferred – must pass and EKG competency exam during onboarding
- Certification in Med Surg a plus
Key Skills & Competencies
- Trach care, chest tube management, PIV starts and IV maintenance, glucometer, strong assessment & time‑management, care coordination, discharge planning, patient education
- Telemetry: monitoring & interpreting cardiac rhythms, post‑catheter, TR band, post‑catheter groin site management (no sheath pulls)
- Drip management: insulin, heparin, Cardizem, amiodarone, milrinone, Digoxin, nicardipine – titrate for HR not BP
Support Staff & Departments
- CNA assists with vitals, glucose checks, baths, bed changes, feeding as needed, patient safety attendant, walking/turning patients
- Unit Secretary: 7 a‑m to 11 p‑m; house‑wide call secretary 11 p‑m to 7 a‑m
- Charge nurse responsibilities variable
- Phlebotomy: most units handle; RNs draw off CVLs
- IV/VAT team: PICC team available
- Resource nurse: discharge nurses float to all units
- RT, Hospitalist, Intensivist – 24/7
- Telemetry tech: central telemetry unit
Technology & Equipment
- EMR: Epic
- IV Pump: Alaris
- Med dispensing: Pyxis
- Monitors: Phillips
- Unit specific: VS3 vital sign monitors, Nova Glucose Stat strips
Floating & Orientation
- Travelers utilized in float pool – required to float to all Med/Telemetry units as needed
- Orientation: 1 day education modules; 2 days departmental
Scheduling
- Weekend rotation: 5‑6 weekend shifts every 12 (on a 6‑week schedule)
- Shift times: 12‑hour shifts – 7 a‑m – 7 p‑m or 7 p‑m – 7 a‑m
- Schedule cycle: every 6 weeks
- No calls, holidays: 1 shift each major holiday (Thanksgiving, Dec 24/25/31, Jan 1)
- RTO requests: must go through manager for approval
